palm bay is located in the state of Florida and has been inhabited by humans since at least 3000 BC. In 1527, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto explored the area and named it La Florida after the Palm Bay tree he saw there. The first permanent European settlement in what is now palm bay was founded by Capt. John St. Johns on a small island near present day Fort Myers in 1795. By 1821, all of today's Palm Bay had been acquired by Miami County. The name "Palm Bay" likely comes from the palmetto trees that grow here; these are common trees in South America and Asia but not so common in North America. The earliest reference to palms being found here is from 1810 when Captain William Davenport noted "several large palms growing among some low bushes." In 1824, James Kenedy built a wharf on this site for exporting sugarcane to Cuba and imported manypalmettoes from South America which he planted along his wharf. When sugar cane became popular as a crop in North America, Kenedy's plantation became one of the most important sugar estates in Miami County. The first manafortual airfield here was Palm Beach Municipal Airport (later renamed Palm Beach-Dade Regional Airport), opened on December 5, 1944 as part of World War II military aviation activity at nearby Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (then Hollywood Field). This project would have added two new runways making palm bay an internationalairport with broad based service available across multiple airlines . Development delays led eventually to another roundabout plan that would have increased runway length by about 100 feet with no new terminal buildings being constructed however this latest plan has also faced opposition from local business owners who feel that an increase in services will not result in significant savings
In 1892, the first streetcar line in Palm Bay was opened. The track ran for 1 1/2 miles and served as a predecessor to today's Palm Bay Transit Authority. In 1907, the first electric light system in Palm Bay was installed. The first post office in Palm Bay was established in 1909. In 1916, the name of the town changed from "Pinellas" to "Palm Beach". In 1935, World War II began and palm bay became part of Florida's military zone. The population increased rapidly due to war-time demand for labor.
