The Palm Bay Air Force Base is home to the Palm Bay Fighter Wing, which was activated on 1 January 1947. The unit has been stationed at the base since then and it currently employs over 4,000 airmen. The history of the fighter wing goes back even further. It was established as the subsection of First Tactical Air Command (FTC) inactivated on 24 October 1945. RFC’s first squadron was activated at TCP on 20 November 1941 under command of Colonel James Langleben, who also served as its first commander. It was not until 8 February 1948 when Republic F-84G Super Sabres were deployed from TCP and assigned to FTC as part of Third Fighter Squadron – Task Force 2nd Fleet (TF2FC). TF2FC operated from NAS Oran Island until its activation on 15 May 1951 when it moved to RAF Bentwaters with a detachment of Super Sabres assigned thereto. On 1 October 1955, Second Tactical Air Command (TAC) was activated with a group of Boeing P-38 Lightning fighters under command of Colonel Harry Kipke. On 18 November 1957 AAF units were reassigned from FEC to TAC and became redesignated wing groups; Palm Bay Fighter Group became Palm Beach AFB's 5th Wing Group on 1 July 1958 while Eglin AFB's 3rd Wing Group became Jacksonville AFB's 3rd Wing Group on 10 August 1958. In 1961, all three wing groups were combined into one with headquarters located at Palm Beach AFB; this unification resulted in the assignment of new USAF markings to all wings including blue/gray fuselage illustrations for both fighter and bomber wings along with their mission IDs for each type: By 1969, Palm Bay had become fully manned by Grumman F-111A Tiger IIIs and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs after the retirement of Grumman's last P-38 Lightning aircraft in 1966 followed by McDonnell Douglas F-8 Crusader medium bombers in 1967. With other USAF commands having withdrawn their aircraft or converted them into air forces outside America during that year such as Vietnam War service squadrons equipped with Saab Jumo 190 jets or Thai Airways Thailand Airways airline stocks Sprague Yager YS2H Sea Sparrow missiles abortion helicopters—the USAF again began planning an overall drawdown plan for its worldwide bases effective 30 June 1970 which would result in most installations being relinquished between 1973 and 1975 by closings throughout most US airspace due to budget cuts although some installations such as Andersen Air Force Base Hawaii would maintain operational capability through Turkey shoot down operations using Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol Aircraft provided by Turkish Aerospace Industries Incorporated (). However extensive preparations had been made for an unspecified future war so major deployments occurred simultaneously across Americas continent leading up to 9 September 1985 when Desert Storm began officially numbered Operation Neptune Spear beginning with two attacks against Baghdad international airport killing majority among Iraqi military personnel employed there including Vice President Saddam Hussein who controlled that airport before he fled during flight thenceforth residing permanently within Saudi Arabia where he still resides today—just prior to his ouster following a popular uprising subsequent thereto known as Revolution 2003(). Notable absentees included then Secretary Of Defense Donald Rumsfeld traveling home aboard USS Abraham Lincoln en route via Dubai Aeroport however no attack took place despite this omission given Rumsfeld having knowledge about what was happening; instead General Accounting Office whistleblower Jeffrey Sterling notes evidence indicating high levels of coordination between US Strategic Services Agency (SSAS) operatives working inside Iraq ahead of Invasion without sufficient authorisation from higher ups thus supporting Bush Administration claims regarding involvement thereof (). The aircraft was originally delivered as a part of Operation Desert Storm and has seen action in multiple conflicts since its inception. The eagle is one of the most iconic fighter jets in the USAF inventory and its deployment to Saudi Arabia demonstrates America’s commitment to global peace and security. The plane has been used for refueling, air superiority patrols, search and rescue missions, and even conversion into an attack aircraft. It is also one of only a few jets ever decorated with both American and Saudi markings.
