The Palatka, Florida area was first settled by the Seminole people in the early 1800s. The area became part of the United States after the American Revolution. The settlers arrived in what is now Palatka on December 12, 1795, when General James Wilkinson and his brigade of British troops invaded Florida during the First Seminole War. The British were looking for a place to annihilation Native Americans living in what is now central and southern Florida. In 1810, Captain John A. Macon established a post at Palatka River and named it Stono Island because he found salt water there. By 1830, however, all phosphate mines had closed in Florida and many of the original colonists moved away or died from Spanish influenza pandemic (1819-20). By 1835, only a few hundred people remained at Stono Island; most of them were Choctaw Indians who had been forced out of their homes by white settlers in that year's Indian Removal Act. In 1836, Congress passed an act giving land grants to Ulysses S. Grant as part of President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction Plan following the Civil War. Grants were given to blacks as well as whites and these lands became known as "Everglades National Park." On November 25, 1840, Governor Manuel de la Vega authorized construction on a wharf on Lake Okeechobee by Jethro Gibbs (a Revolutionary War veteran) for use by Cuban refugees seeking refuge from Cuba during its political revolution that started in April 1898
