Ormond Beach, Florida is a town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area and is Downdale Subdivision of Palm Beach Township. Ormond Beach's name comes from Fort Ormonde on the former sugarcane plantation that was located there during the 1800s. In 1892, after most of South Florida had become a U.S. territory, Fort Ormonde was put into commission as an American military post to defend against Spanish incursions into America and to provide security for white settlers who had moved into what would become South Florida. The fort served as a garrison until 1898 when it became surplus and sold to Jacob Weisman for $10,000 dollars ($ million in 2018). The first store in Ormond Beach opened its doors in 1899 on Beaches Boulevard near today's intersection of Northwest First Street and Third Avenue. By 1902, two stores existed and by 1905 there were six businesses with a total inventory of over $1,500 worth of goods! Ormond Beach's growth continued apace through World War I (1914-18) when it became one of nine towns in Palm Beach County that participated in the production and shipment of munitions along with other nearby municipalities such as West Palm Beach and Boynton beach; these cities all received munitions Factories Generating Works contracts which resulted in increased jobs opportunities for local people during wartime! In 1947, Post Office status was conferred upon Ormond beach by then Governor Stonington Aiken following their merger with neighboring Boynton beach municipality! In 1957 Health & Welfare Department designation followed when newly created Town Hall Annex building #2 replaced old Post Office building #1 which had been destroyed by fire some years prior! As mentioned earlier, over time many businesses have closed down or relocated within the boundaries Of Ormond beaches include: Fish Unlimited (now defunct), JCPenney (1994-2001), Sears (1978-1984), KFC (1983-1991), Dunkin' Donuts(1982-1990) as well as several service companies including: tree surgeons Bob Kemette & Sons ('57-'68), landscape architects Harry Goldsmith ('30-'39) & Clifford Slavin ('51-'60). From 1960 until 1990s much decline occurred within township boundaries due To suburbanizing development which has led to loss of land values/jobs opportunities within township limits while increasing traffic congestion throughout downtown area; however recent developments have provided hope for future redevelopment within township boundaries although this will take many years to fruition!
