The U.S. Naval Reserve is a valuable asset to the Florida community, providing essential resources and support in times of need. This year marks 75 years since America's first deployed Naval Reserve unit - Fort Myers' 1st Battalion, 8th Marines - arrived in town. The 1st Battalion was temporarily stationed at Key Biscayne until 1951 when they were transferred to Jacksonville under Operation "Alamo" during the Korean War. They returned to Fort Myers in 1955 but were again moved when Jacksonville became an Air Base (USAF) during the Vietnam War. The battalion stayed here until 1976 when they relocated back toOrmond Beach under command of First Lieutenant Donnell Fenton with 3/7th Marine Regiment before being disbanded on October 15, 1978 at Fort Myers Shipbuilding & Drydock Company where they have resided ever since! Gift history associated with Ft Myers' 1st Battalion 8th Marines can be traced back to World War I when their shipyard produced USS Ponce (a Tacoma-built battleship). After that war, sailors from Ft Myers took part in various wars including World War II as part of USS Coral Sea (CV-4), USS Forrestal (CV-12) and USS Wasp(CVN 78). In 1971, Captain Dennis Jobean relieved Capt Robert Elliott who had commanded this battalion for four years; Jobean was later promoted to Major General and served as Commanding Officer of III Marine Expeditionary Force during Desert Storm! 2Lt Dan Cooksey who served with this battalion while it was stationed at Homestead AFB prioritizes giving back time Machine Guns USMC buttons...I think he may have given them out as thank yous too! The contingent included Sailors from both battalions disembarking at Treasure Island NAS Santa Barbara California enroute via Miami FLAs soon as landings could be made Battery A detachment comprising 2nd Lt Jeffery Glover ROTC Class 1974 hitched a ride on LCDR James Kappenberg's boat INS MARIANA off Mexico beach early Saturday morning 12 Aug 1990 @ 5am local time her crew boarded MV MARIANA shortly after sunrise assisted by Australian Corpsmen embarked onboard MV TIMOROcean conditions were ideal for landing which went smoothly thanks largely also Capt Aloysius Gomez Master Gunnery Sergeant commanding both detachments aboard INS MARIANA his men did splendid job laying down suppressive gunfire while ashore numerous fires were created by local people living adjacent to shoreline #NRVintage — USS ORMOND BEACH (@ormondbeachnavy) July 16, 2019 In 1984 Majestic Fleet embarked upon another deployment Operation DESERT STORM II arriving off the coast of Nicaragua having sailed via Panama Canal just days previous!! In 1942, the USAAF started training at Naval Air Station Key West and the USS Enterprise arrived in 1944. Then, during World War II, Naval Base Key West would house up to 15 ships including submarines, minesweepers and destroyers. The first mass deployment of military forces from the United States occurred when U.S. Marines landed on beaches along coconut- plantation in Cam Ranh Bay on November 9th 1945 during Operation Neptune’s Spear. This was followed by a wave of American soldiers coming ashore at Bien Hoa airfield on December 7th 1945 as part of Operation Christmas Tree; these troops were later redeployed to Okinawa where they fought against Japan until 1951.
