The Orlando Naval Base has been a part of the United States Navy for over 60 years. The base provides a home for submarines, destroyers, and other naval vessels. It is also home to one of the largest shipyards in the world. In addition to its role as a navalbase, Orlando Naval Base also houses the Florida Air National Guard's 1st Fighter Wing and the 5th Fleet Support Command Headquarters. In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F Kennedy ordered that all American warships in Cuba be withdrawn. This order made Orlando Naval Base one of only two US military bases in Cuba at that time. The USS Ormandy was redeployed from Guantanamo Bay with orders to assist in this deployment. In 1973, during Operation Neptune's Spear, USS Coral Sea (LHD-5) was deployed off Key West after being damaged by Iranian torpedo boats while patrolling Gulf of Oman waters near Iran's Shayeban Peninsula. The ship arrived at Jacksonville Naval Station on October 7th before proceeding to Orlando Naval Base on October 10th for final repairs and availability. On November 3rd - five days after she had arrived - Coral Sea became operational as America's first deployed nuclear-powered warship since World War II when she Entertained Flag Squadron Seventy-Two (FLAGS 72) aboard her namesake carrier CVN 73 while conducting joint exercises with Spanish ships off Burgos Strait south of Gibraltar concurrent with NATO Exercise "Balkan Shield." She returned to duty on December 11th after completing three weeks availability at Jacksonville and providing support for Operation Neptune's Spear;Operation Desert Storm; and operations against northern Iraq subsequent thereto Following her return from duty in Spain she underwent conversion into an amphibious assault ship(AGS) until transferred back to Norfolk May 9th 1997- under command of Commander LtCdr Michael J McNamara USNR (ret). The navy was founded in 1775, and during its early years it relied heavily on merchant shipping to bring goods and troops to war. In 1807, the navy decided to build its own warships, and began buying ships from commercial companies. This new strategy allowed the navy to become more self-sufficient and able to fight in multiple wars. During World War II, the navy again became very reliant on merchant shipping. This time, however, the navy was able to purchase large numbers of warships from America's allies. This gave the navy a significant advantage over other countries in terms of firepower and resources. Because of this, naval forces were able to carry out many successful campaigns against Japan throughout World War II. The post-war period saw some changes for the navy. In 1971, Congress passed the Military Establishment Reform Act which changed how many active military services there are in America. At this point, there were only six services that provide naval service: The Marines (who are part of Marine Corps Forces), Navy Seals (who serve as Naval Security Service), Coast Guard (which is part of Homeland Security), Air Force Reserve (which is part of Air Force Special Operations Command), Army National Guard (), and Department of Defense Inspector General (). Since then, several other services have been added including Army Rangers (), Coast Guardsmen () and Navy SEALS (). However, these additional services are not currently assigned to any specific task force or squadron outside their individual units (). In recent years there has been a trend towards greater integration between different branches of government with regards naval service being seen as an important component of that Integration process ().

By 1990 IATA: ORL had become defunct due to competition from Tampa International Airport* [*see below]), although US Airways traces its roots back to MacDill AFB still being home to one runway serving both cities!
