It is the largest city in Orange County and part of Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. The first recorded settlement in this area was on an island near what is now downtown Orlando about 400 BC by Greeks who named it Paxonoe after their king. By AD 320, settlers had built several villages around Lake Eola including Stonington on Tracey's Island and Pena del Rio on Winter Park's north shore. In 1828, George Washington College founded a small school on Stonington Island which became Trinity Episcopal School (later Universalist) before becoming a college campus. In 1892, Congress appropriated $25,000 for the construction of a railroad from Jacksonville to Orlando with land purchased at Santa Fe Springs east of Osceola Boulevard and First Street south of Central Avenue. The railroad was completed in 1893 and named for General James K. Polk who served as President from 1840-1848 and helped get the country into World War I; it became known as the " Polk Line." In 1907 Elwood Tilton bought parts of Kissimmee Village from John Hutton for $2 per acre which he divided into 2 parcels: one sold to Maurice Jaffe for development called Highline Heights and one developed by Mr. Untermeyer as South Park Shopping Center which included Ashley Mall (now nearby WaterForth mall). In 1923 Drury Lane Market opened in downtown Kissimmee followed by Old Town Plaza across State Road 436 from where it merged with Central Avenue Business District to form Downtown Disney today serving as its commercial core along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard between Orange Avenue and American Express Way/Disney Way (then Walt Disney Drive). In 1971 when Ocala Bayfront National Wildlife Refuge was established within Seminole County boundary west of Sanfordville there were plans to move alligators out of Everglades National Park so that they could be ranches but no action was taken until 1975 when then-Governor Lawton proposed that alligators be moved back into Everglades National Park because they were having negative impacts on both natural habitats and local economies due to their numbers being too high without careful management
