The Orlando Air Force Base is home to the Florida Air National Guard's 82nd Fighter Wing, which has a long history of deploying gift baskets to military and civilian recipients. On Dec. 3, 1941, the wing organized a fly-in for members of the United StatesAAF who had volunteered for service in World War II. The event was held at Ormond Beach Municipal Airport and included speeches by then-Secretary of War Henry Stimson and General Carl Spaatz, the first American general to lead Allied forces in Europe. In 1945, the wing donated a Douglas A-24C Avenger bomber to the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence as part ofOperation 'Spinball'. The aircraft was used in Exercise 'Varsity' with RAF squadrons from England and France. In 1957, the wing donated an F-86F Sabre jet fighter to Belgian Airlines as part of Operation 'Tiger'. The plane flew missions over North Africa during Operation 'Warrior' against Egyptian oil refineries. In 1978, the wing gifted an F-4 Phantom jet fighter to Spain's Civil Defense Forces as part ofOperation 'Aurora.' Spanish pilots flew these jets into action duringHurricane Gloria when it made landfall on Sept. 20 that year. In 1984, gifts were given to both Greece and Czechoslovakia during their respective visitations by U.S.-led NATO nations Festival Of Freedom/NATO Day Celebration (FESTIVAL OF FREEDOM/NATIONAL DAY OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA). These events were commemorated with flyovers by USAF Thunderbirds aviation units from Sanford International Airport in Sanford, Fla., homeport for Military Airlift Command (MAC) Lockheed C-130 Hercules flight crews flying cargo supplies into Yugoslavia during those years. In 2000–2001 donations were made to Poland's Armed Forces throughthe Foundation For Polish American Relations (FPAR), providing items such as war surplus ammunition and vehicles along with cash donations totaling $50,000 for each nation visited between October 10th and November 2nd; this represented one million dollars in total gifts given since FPAR was established in 1987! The United States Air Force Deployed Gift Program (AFDP) is a program that allows service members to send personalized gifts to their friends and family in support of military missions. The program has been in place for over 20 years, and it provides unique opportunities for USAF personnel to show their support for their comrades-in-arms. The AFDP allows servicemen and women from all branches of the military to send a gift basket filled with items such as clothing, tools, equipment, or home decor. The baskets are then sent directly to the recipient’s unit or deployed location.
