The Marine Corps has been a part of the American culture for centuries. The Marines have played an important role in our history and are still an integral part of today’s military. The Marines Gifts History Project is dedicated to honoring these veterans by sharing their unique story andorigin. The Marine Corps was founded on November 14, 1876, as the Second Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army. The regiment was first stationed at Pensacola, Florida, where it served from 1876-1879 under General James K. Polk’s administration as part of the Mexican-American War effort. In 1880, the regiment was re-activated at Quantico Naval Base in Virginia Beach, Virginia and participated in the American Civil War under Major General John Jumper Howe. Following the war, the battalion composed of 5th through 8th Connecticut regiments were transferred to Camp Butler (later Camp Butler Barracks) in Indianapolis Harbor, Indiana which served until 1865 as home for all Marine detachments then located within present day Lucas County (including Opa Locka). Opa Locka is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County and the second most populous city in Miami-Dade County after Overtown. The name Opa Locka comes from "opaque" (meaning "not transparent") and "locka" ( meaning "town"). The city's first settlers were Spanish Catholics who named their town San Pedro de la Loma because of its high hills that overlooked Lake Okeechobee. When Opa Locka became a municipality on November 1, 1957, it only had a population of 2,500 people. However, over time it grew rapidly with annexations from other municipalities such as Kendall Beach and Coconut Grove. In 2002, Opa Locka annexed neighbouring Pompano Beach to form a single municipality with a total population of 27,814; however this annexation did not eventuate in any real growth until 2006 when Pompano Beach annexed Fort Lauderdale which then annexedMiami Dade as well creating an even more dense urban area around Opa Lockaa

Opa Locka is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,955 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville–Marco Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Opa Locka began as a small community on the banks of the Apalachicola River in what is now southeastern Alachua County. A post office was established at Opa Locka in 1892 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1960. The city's first mayor was Wm. H. Willcox and its first councilman was A.F. “Butch” Wingate. In 1907, Opa Locka became one of only two cities in Florida to be granted women's suffrage by state legislators under the name "Opa Locks City Women." The vote for women were held on November 3, 1907; Jeanette Rankin won with 52% of the vote against incumbent Mayor John Kellar's 48%. In 1915, Opa Locka annexed parts of unincorporated Marco Valley and re-established itself as an independent municipality with a population of 18 residents (10 men and 10 women). On February 17, 1926, voters approved an annexation plan that would have tripled OpalockA's population to 100 residents within five years – but this annexation never happened due to similar objections from neighboring municipalities who felt their territory had been taken without their consent or compensation. Only after World War II didOpalockA gain a sense of self-awareness as a separate community thanks to influxes of military personnel and their families who were stationed at nearby Naval Air Station Miramar during World War II; many businesses opened up due to soldiers' need for housing and work visas not being available to locals not enrolled in military service which discouraged migration out of state (the same thing happened when Ft Walton Beach annexed into Mobile Bayou Municipal Utility District following the end of World War II). On January 1, 1957 - just one year after incorporation -OpalockA adopted its present name: "Opa Locks". The city limits increased by adding land northward from State Road 21 near Lake Ivey Park across State Road 249 eastward reaching US-1 & I-5 southward including parts of Aubrey/Greene Creek before ending at Gulf Breeze Boulevard near US 14 & FM 437 (southwest corner proximate US 9 exit ramp) giving total boundaries now stretching nearly 17 miles along both rms
