As captain of an American ship captained by Commodore James Olds during the Seminole Wars (1835–42), Captain John Olds encountered members of this Tribe while exploring Florida's eastern coast in 1837 and decided to name his new community after them in recognition of their cooperation and bravery against Indian aggression. In 1840,Captain John Olds' great-grandson Hernando Ponce de Leon explored and landed at what is now Daytona Beach on February 14, 1492 ± years after Columbus discovered America's East Coast In 1881 when old railroad tracks were built through town center just north of I-95 exit ramp there was a lot of talk about moving out as it would be right next to highway construction but nothing ever happened In 1916 when gasoline became available people started using it instead of coal which made farming possible so much later Allison Wagon Wheel Creamery opened up in 1922 with many other businesses like grocery stores being opened up throughout the 1920's It wasn't until 1969 when local artist Archibald MacLeish moved into town and began painting homes in downtown that things got really interesting There have been many changes over time such as traffic congestion going from never happening to something that actually helps keep things alive today
