In 1837, the O’Keefe brothers organized a group of settlers to come to what is now Ocoee. They named their new town after their father-in-law, Colonel James O’Keefe who had died in 1836. The town quickly grew and soon became a vital stop on the Underground Railroad. After the American Civil War, the town prospered and growth continued until World War II when it all but disappeared due to military activity. Today, a small amount of social housing remains in downtown Ocoee while most businesses have moved away or closed down over time.
