The North Port Navy League has a rich history in the community. The league was founded on September 15, 1922 by Rear Admiral James T. Hines and Major General C. W. Poston with the idea of honoring sailors who had served in World War I and World War II. The league became a reality on December 1, 1922 when Rear Admiral Hines donated a boat to be used as the first navy deployed gift from the league’s inaugural season. Since its inception, the North Port Navy League has given away more than $1 million in gifts to local Naval Service members and their families. In 2009, the league donated a USS Constitution Class Battleship (BB-65) to be used as an event center for sailing events throughout NorthPort during winter months. In 2013, the league donated USS Yorktown (CV-13) to be used as an event center for sailing events throughout NorthPort during summer months. In addition to giving away gifts, the North Port Navy League also sponsors numerous fundraising events such as “Sailing for America” which raises money for military veterans charities; “Cocktails at Sailors Rest” which fundraiser beer and wine tastings for local bars; and “ Commander’s Cup Day” which celebratesoran service members who have made significant contributions to their country through active duty or honorable retirement status. Through these initiatives, the Northport Navy League continues to support our Sailors who serve this great nation while making donations that help many lives in our community

North Port, Florida is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,524 at the 2010 census. North Port is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Broward County and has been a part of the county for over 100 years. It is located on Fort Pierce Bay on Miami-Dade County's south coast. The area that now makes up North Port was first settled by Indian men in 1836 as part of what would become Fort Pierce. In 1851, Captain James Wades land grant to his brother-in-law David Levy included land that would later become Northport beachfront. William Ponce de Leon visited the area in 1565 and called it "Citrus Key". In 1861, General Marcus Weldon built Camp Butler north of present day Northport to provide military protection against Seminoles who were terrorizing nearby towns and villages. From 1861 until 1865, during the American Civil War, Fort Butler served as an important base of operations for Union forces fighting Confederate forces along South Florida's central coast. In 1886, John Hennessey donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of undeveloped shoreline to create a small town known as Hennessey Beach on Miami's Biscayne Bayfront with access only from docking sites for vessels moored there for trade or pleasure excursions; however this soon proved too isolated and unprofitable so Hennessey decided to reincorporate Northport intobrowardcounty hetmancy In 1912 Drury & Sons leased some tracts from Commissioner Harry Laughlin creating a commercial fishing port adjacent to present day Northport which became home to over 3 million pounds (1 ton) worth of fresh seafood each year by 1958.. dredging began on Little fort Pierce bayou which backed onto today's north port beach sandshore c0mpleted in 1959 increasing berths capacity from 400 vehicles/day to 2,000 vehicles/day further developing pier facilities including wharves extending into Everglades National Park.. North Port is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 2,711 as of the 2010 census. North Port is on the Jacksonville Bay and it's largestportion of land is within the city limits. North Port's economy centers around maritime and related industries, along with tourism. It has been a port since 1836 and its chief industry until recently was dredging for shipping purposes. The first permanent settler in what would become North Port was John Thornton in 1836. He built a cabin on his farmstead near present-day Harbor Boulevard and Block Street. Thornton had come from Manchester, England on board the brig "Alligator" which sailed from Liverpool to Tampa Bay on December 10, 1835 laden with passengers and cargo including flour, saltpeter, timber, tobacco and other goods destined for American ports across the Gulf of Mexico. The vessel reached Fort Myers January 11th 1840 after passage through the Southeastern Passage - one of only four vessels ever to do so during that period! A second permanent settler was Philip Hickey who arrived November 15th 1840 aboard USS Constitution under Captains James Cook (1795-1856) and Franklin Dyson (1802-1875). Hickey had come overland from Rhode Island via West Palm Beach on his horse drawn wagon! At this time there were no roads or railsroads available to transportation people in their area so he made his way by waterbound stagecoach route to Key West where he disembarked at what is now US 1st Avenue South near Jupiter Inlet before proceeding by boat down Lake Okeechobee to St Augustine where he sold merchandise at Ferry Landing! In March 1841 Hickey purchased 640 acres south of present day Harbor Boulevard from John Slattery for $200 cash! This parcel included what is now Northeast 3rd Street between Harbor Boulevard (now University Avenue)and Northwest First Street . From this point forward Northport developed primarily due toimeritization by private citizens seeking to improve access to good lands surrounding their villages/ports/cities during a time when such activity was discouraged by government officials anxious about encroachment upon natural resources! In 1850 United States Territorial Governor Prentice Moultrie authorized establishment of three military districts named respectively Choctaw District No 1; Seminole District No 2; Okaloosa District No 3 within Indian Territory then newly organized as Florida Territory! These districts were intended as defensive measures against Indian attacks on Umatilla Valley although no Indian attacks occurred within these boundaries!! While these official activities did not result in any real economic development either for local residents or merchants outside those areas they did provide an opportunity for private individuals interested in improving infrastructure within territorial limits!) While much has changed since 1850 regarding our current location we can still appreciate some aspects of our early history including: harboring two large commercial ships all years without incident despite high waves crashing against shoreline creating dangerous conditions; providing jobs opportunities for locals both during wartime periods as well as peacetime times; hosting several international events including the Pan American Games which took place here in 1976; being designated an International Coastal Climate Zone Zone Winner thanks to concerted efforts by numerous organizations sponsored by NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service ; being homeported here during major hurricane seasons such as Hurricane Irma which caused extensive damage adjacentto our town center late last year; offering educational opportunities both primary school level up through college level courses offered through community colleges like Jacksonville State University while also having various trade shows throughout the year showcasing local businesses ); etc., etc.,etc…..

The town grew rapidly and by 1881 it had a population of over 10,000 people. North Port became a major commercial and shipping center during the late 19th century and into the 20th century.
