North Port, Florida is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. North Port is part of the Pensacola–Fernandina–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site of present-day Northport was first inhabited by the Timucua people in what is now Escambia County. In 1665 Captain John Smith and his party discovered the Floridas and named it after their leader, Governor Manuel de Menéndez de Avilés. The town began as a cattle farm and later became an important port for exports to Cuba and Mexico. In 1892, North Port was chosen as the site of Pensacola's new county courthouse. The courthouse remained in use until 1957 when it burned down. In 1925, Pensacola annexed the adjacent towns of Live Oak and Saint Johns Beach to form a new municipality called "Pensacola". The name change reflected Pensacola's growing importance as a commercial center following World War II; prior to that time it had been known as "Fort Lauderdale". In 1978, NorthPort merged with nearby Fort Walton Beach to become one city under then-Mayor Don Armstrong's administration. In 1983, Armstrong resigned after being charged with bribery; he was acquitted but remains popularly thought to have lost some control over police services during his tenure as mayor. After several years of planning by Mayor Rick Baker (D), who took office in 2001 after serving two terms as mayor before that), NorthPort emerged from its merge into one cohesive city on June 1st 2006 with 815 residents comprising four wards: east side (northwest corner of Market Street between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue South), west side (southwest corner of First Avenue South between Fourth Avenue South and Fifth AvenueSouth) central business district (including downtown streets northward from I-95 southwideth towards US 41); downtown ward eastside; northwest ward; southeast ward including parts of northeastward extending eastward along 2nd avenue south from I-95 which were annexed by northwest ward in 1984; annexations made within wards which did not previously fall within those boundaries - such as annexations made by newly created neighborhoods within or adjacent to existing wards - making for an even more evenly divided City Council among seven members since 2006 without any duplication or extra voting required beyond simple majority rule instead like previous administrations where council members were elected at large regardless of party affiliation thereby limiting bipartisanship on issues facing the City government while also increasing potential conflict arising out of overlapping jurisdiction/responsibilities across different sectors/agencies/ministries etc.; creating efficiencies through consolidation through absorption/merger practices various state laws governing municipal government being followed rather than adhering to formal legal requirements specific to each municipality whereby mergers proceeded automatically upon passage by both chambers allowing for quick transformation or conversionover time without having ever gone through an open public hearing process unless explicitly requested otherwise thereby avoiding protracted lawsuits seeking injunctive relief against unconstitutional changes brought about thru amalgamation particularly regarding powers granted unto newly merged municipalities pursuant thereto such power grants typically include authority to establish local zoning ordinances defining all types OF businesses AND property therein subject ONLY TO APPROVAL FROM CITY COUNCIL BEFOREFOREST PARK RANCH LLC., HOA OWNERSHIP OF CLUBhouses UNITPROPERTY & GREATER PORT WALKER AREA IS SUBJECT TO ZONING REQUEST FROM CITY COUNCIL ONLY AFTER APPROVAL FROM THE COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES
