Coffee gift history in North Miami, Florida goes back to the early 1800s. In 1847, Captain John A. Hickey and his crew of pirates founded the first coffee plantation on this site. The Hickey family ran this business for over a century until it was acquired by J.B. Hunt in 1912. Hunt renamed the plantation Coffee Plantation and continued to sell coffee beans from this location until 1957. In 1948, Jens Jensen purchased Coffee Plantation from Hunt and began to grow Arabica coffeebeans there. Jensen's son, Barry Jensen, took over the business in 1976 and continued to operate it as a small family-owned business until 1994 when he sold it to Italian businessman Angelo Boccia for $24 million dollars. Boccia operated Coffee Plantation until 2002 when it fell into foreclosure and was taken over by American Express Credit Union who then leased it back to Angelo Boccia himself in 2006. At present, Coffee Plantation is being managed by two families: Boccia's descendants are handling marketing, while another group of investors is responsible for growing coffee beans and maintaining the property year-round. Today, Café Libre Angosturaño occupies a significant portion of one block of Flagler Street adjacent to North Miami Beach Parkway in an area that has been called "the heart of South Miami" since its founding in 1917 as part of plans for development around Key West Boulevard/Nelson Avenue (now State Road 7). Café Libre Angosturaño is one of only a few remaining original enterprises from that period still actively running today; other notable survivors include The Grapesvine Cafeteria which closed its doors in 1985 after more than fifty years operation; La Casa de Leon which shut down its doors in 1990 after serving nearly three hundred thousand customers annually; Ponce de Leon Cafe which closed its doors following Hurricane Andrew in 1992; . And finally The Crowne Plaza Hotel - now known as Trade Mart - reopened its doors fifteen months after Superstorm Sandy made landfall at high tide on August 29th 2005 with just seventeen employees! He built his home there until his death in 1947. Another early resident was Harry Daugherty (), who came over with his family from Ireland about 1880. Daugherty started out as a laborer but soon began running some of South Beach’s earliest businesses including The Dolphin Tavern (). After moving away from South Beach during prohibition he opened another business called The Irishman’s Fords (); this business continued into the 1970s when it was replaced by an Italian restaurant called Papa Luigi’s that later became known as Pizzeria Mario Batali (). Asking around I learned that three other early residents - Clarence Stevenson (), Willard ("Willie") Smith () and Arthur "Buddy" Banister (1886-1966) - also lived here before moving away during prohibition or after being arrested for narcotics trafficking or simply because they couldn't get ahead while living under government watch ().
