North Lauderdale is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 22,913 at the 2010 census. It became a city on December 15, 2009. The first European settlers in what is now North Lauderdale were Spanishmen who arrived in 1718 and built a trading post on the banks of the Stono River. They named their new settlement "Tenerife" after their homeland in Spain. The first Englishman to settle in what is now North Lauderdale was Captain John Smith who11 landed there on October 3, 1739 with his small party of Adventurers seeking passage to India through Florida's Stonington Channel. The area that would become North Lauderdale was originally part of Indian Creek Township which was formed from parts ofBroward and Miami counties on January 1, 1836 following the US Civil War when Seminole Indians attacked Fort Brooke near present-day Hollywood Boulevard and drove out American troops under General William Troup. In 1868 Spanish land grants were given to prominent citizens including José Gomez de la Vega (for land between State Road 704 and 8th Street), Antonio Fernández (for land north of I-95), Manuel Fernandez (for land south of I-395) and José Olivares y Valdés (for land east of I-95). Most residents come from areas that are today within Everglades National Park boundaries: Southeast Drancy (), Sunrise () and Pinecrest (). North Lauderdale's economy depended heavily on agriculture until after World War II when industry began to grow with major contributions coming from printing plants such as Joplin Paper Company (), Volvo Cars ()) and Allied Signal (). After over 50 years of growth without corresponding job creation or housing development, low property values led some people to try to gentrify neighborhoods in order for more affluent residents to buy into them; this process ultimately led to tension between wealthier homeowners/promoters who wanted more privacy for their home values while poorerResidents felt they had been left behind by the town's rapid growth. In response, Mayor Joe Alioto created the Mayor's Advisory Commission on Economic Development which made recommendations for change such as increasing densities within existing neighborhoods while also developing an economic development plan which he submitted to county commissioners prior to becoming mayor in 2001. After years of discussion it was decided that North Lauderdale should become its own city Limits proposal passed by voters at a special election held November 6th 2009 resultededin City limits being approved by referendumasterisking 61% yes vote against 34% no vote . On December 15th 2009 North Lauderdale became a city with full authority over all ordinances enacted before it including rules about building codes etc., elections can be held anywhere within city limits regardless of whether they have been approved by voters or not
In 1855, North Lauderdale was founded as a citrus plantation by Captain John A. Laughlin and his brother-in-law Colonel James S. Brooks. The first post office was established in 1857, and the town grew rapidly around the plantations until they were sold in 1865 to Major General Julius E. Smith of Tampa Bay for $75,000. North Lauderdale became a city on July 1, 1886, when it was annexed by Tampa Bay. In 1959, the city merged with Hillsborough County to form the new state of Florida.
