The New Smyrna Beach Army National Guard unit has been in existence since 1951. The unit was activated on October 3, 1951 and is composed of the 9th Infantry Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, and the 41st Support Battalion. The battalion was first stationed at Camp Butler until it was relocated to Fort Myers in 1962. In 1966, the battalion moved again when it was re-designated as the 9th Infantry Regiment (Florida). The regiment remained at Fort Myers until it deployed to Afghanistan in 2001. Since then, the regiment has served multiple deployments throughout Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2006, the brigade activated a detachment for duty in Haiti with a mission to provide security for U.S citizens living there under conditions of political instability and instability. The detachment operated out of an army post located in Plaqueras until September 2007 when they were transferred to another army post located in Petit-Bourg due to manpower shortages within their old detachment’s unit structure. As a result of this deployment, both battalions now have two detachments operational concurrently within their brigade headquarters! In 2009, the battalion underwent conversion from infantry into armor support units with transition from MTOE armored vehicles onto Humvees/Light tanks effective January 1st 2010 through May 30th 2010 inclusive; prior to that date all armor support troops wore TRUCKS which were gradually phased out over time as MTOE became more prevalent among our troops due to its advantages including better firepower capabilities against enemy targets as well as survivability against combat injuries etc... Armor support troops are now equipped with Abrams Tanks/Ammarries while infantry continue wearing trucks until such time that new Abrams Tanks become available or we receive new Light tanks which will be Militarized versions of existing American armored vehicles
