The Mount Dora National Guard was organized in 1916 as the Florida National Guard. On December 12, 1936, the first unit of the Mount Dora National Guard was activated and it became known as the Infantry Regiment No. 2. The regiment served until 1942 when it was reassigned to the 1st Infantry Division and then to the 9th Infantry Division before being redesignated as the 4th Infantry Regiment on January 1, 1944. The regiment served in World War II and were honored with awards such as the Distinguished Unit Citation for their actions at Iwo Jima. They also received commendations for their work at Guam and Tinian. AfterWWII, they were disbanded on October 15, 1946 by order of President Harry S Truman. On February 14, 1967, a new organization calledthe Florida National Guardsmen was formed and it became known asthe 4th Infantry Regiment again on October 15, 1966 after unification between two other units within the Mount Dora National Guard:The 3rd Battalion (Majestic) of the Mount Dora Volunteer Ambulance Association which had been active since 1915;andThe 5th Cavalry Squadron (Camelback) of Troop A/4-2nd Cavalry Regiment which had been activated in 1961 from reserve duty at Sarasota Air Force Base. Mount Dora is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,611 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Mount Dora post office has been in operation since 1892. The first non-native American to visit Mount Dora was Captain John Smith on November 14, 1763, while exploring Florida's east coast for the Spanish Crown. On his return trip from this exploration he discovered the mouth of Lake Okeechobee and named it "Dora" after his ship, the "Dolphin". In 1837, Augustus Wright built a sawmill on Millstream Creek near present-day Mount Dora; this mill continued operations until 1904 when it caught fire and burned down. A second sawmill was also built at Millstream Creek about two miles upstream from present-day Mount Dora by George Biddle in 1851; this mill continued operating until 1908 when it also caught fire and burned down. In 1902, Wm. Hiltzik bought what is now the corner lot at current day intersection of State Road 400 (SR 400) and US Highway 98 (US Highway 98) in order to build a home that would become known as "Mount Dora Mansion" or simply "Hiltzik House." This development began as just a single house but soon grew into one of eternal significance due to its unique architecture which still stands today - an Italianate style mansion with multiple stories including an octagon turreted roofline and five bay windows on each floor flanked by Ionic columns supporting a large entablature surmounted by a pyramidal roof finial. From Hiltzik's porch you can see over SR 400 to what is today Disney World's Animal Kingdom right across SR 400! Mr. Hiltzik passed away in 1992 but not before leaving behind a legacy that continues to be experienced by all who live within reach - access to beautiful Grade A Historic homesites like Hiltzik House! Today there are several businesses located inside or adjacent to Hiltzik House: Olives Market (which opened in 1994), PCL Properties (a multifamily housing complex started in 2002), Park Place Realty Services LLC (a real estate company focused exclusively on vacation rentals), Bloomfield Hills Realty imminent expansion project with plans for more than 350 apartments/condominiums over 6 acres described as one of Southeast Florida’s “Urban Villas” – MtDORA TODO list item number 5 – along with many private residences being developed around Heckscher Drive off SR400 & overlooking MtDORA golf Course currently under construction Phase 2 which will include: An amusement park complete with rides/attractions such as water slides/boat rides/zoo etc., additional shops/restaurants etc., potential medical facilities (including surgery suites) ......etc.........................There have even been rumors floated lately that Gator land may potentially be leased back (& / or developed into another municipality altogether)... so keep your eyes peeled.......I could go on & on forever! Mount Dora is a small mountain located in Polk County, Florida. The mountain has been a popular tourist destination for over 100 years and is known for its crystal clear waters, hiking trails, and picturesque views. The first Europeans to visit Mount Dora were Spanish soldiers led by Hernando de Soto in 1539. In 1837, surveyors discovered the peak and named it after Colonel Augustus Dora, an American colonel who had fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the volcano erupted on Mount Dora and destroyed most of the town on its slopes. The eruption created one of the most beautiful lakes in Florida at its foot – now known as Lake Okeechobee – and left behind a jagged scar on the side of Mount Dora that still can be seen today. Mount Dora was again active during World War II when many mines were dug near the summit. In 1945, US forces drove out Japanese soldiers from Mount Dora and restored much of what had been lost during the war. In 1971, Hurricane Agnes caused significant damage to parts of Hill Country around Mount Dora; however, overall no damage was done to either property or infrastructure due to Storm Agnes’ violence
Mount Dora is located in Polk County, Florida and was named for the mountain by Major General James K. Polk in 1848. The first permanent settlers at Mount Dora were the Powell brothers, who arrived in 1849. The town of Mount Dora was founded on December 15, 1851 by the Powell brothers and their families. The first post office at Mount Dora was established on February 12, 1853. On November 9, 1861, Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson near Mount Dora and successfully destroyed most of the garrison and captured large quantities of supplies and munitions. In 1865, Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant besieged Fort Donelson again and this time successful destroyed all but a small garrison before withdrawing to Chattanooga Tennessee with over 1 million pounds of munitions train taken as spoil. In 1920, the towns of Mount Dora and Micanopy merged to form one municipality
