Mount Dora is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. A post office has been in operation in Mount Dora since 1907. The name of the town comes from the mountain range that surrounds it. Mount Dora is located about 24 miles south of Gainesville and 25 miles north of St Petersburg on Interstate 441. The first people to live here were Greek settlers who arrived during the American Revolution on horseback from what is now Greece. They named their community after the peak of a mountain range near Athens, Georgia which they thought resembled aDora (a Greek word meaning "diver"). After several years, they abandoned their settlement because of bad weather and lack of resources. In 1827, two brothers named John and Peter Smith built a cabin on Topo Chico Mesa overlooking Lake Okeechobee while waiting for better land to be available in Polk County. In 1830 they sold their land to Captain Claiborne Emory for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest per year until it was paid off. Captain Emory renamed the area Mount Dora after his home state of Georgia – he had heard about an ideal location for an early cotton plantation called “Dorado” by white traders in South America. By 1835 Captain Emory had three hundred acres (120 ha) cultivated with forty head of cattle and twenty-five hogs; he also constructed fourteen buildings including one house used as a jail and another as a schoolhouse; he erected four steamboats to handle his cotton crops; and founded the first store at present day Main Street corner First Avenue N/S where today's State Library is located. A road leading from Jacksonville through Gainesville connected Mount Dora with Jacksonville on its eastern edge until 1906 when I-4 was completed connecting both cities via St Petersburg–Jacksonville Road (now US 301). At this time there were only three houses in Mount Dora: One owned by Captains Claiborne Emory and Jno Pembroke, one run by Mrs Aulds who managed kitchen gardens for families living along I-4 at milepost 269; one house occupied by Methodist preacher Dr Hensley; two others were rented out intermittently by farmers or soldiers stationed nearby during military campaigns or epidemics such as yellow fever or cholera that struck area villages during that period From Highway 441 you can follow signsposted routes leading into towns within Polk County like Winter Garden or Live Oak where residents would dress up for Halloweens or Christmas parties hosted at local hotels
