The Miami Springs Marine Barracks, now the Marine Corps Headquarters, was built in 1903. The first marines were called the “Miami Springs Rifle and Pistol Battalion” and deployed to Cuba during World War 1. They fought under General John Pershing and inflicted great losses on the Spanish forces. In 1917, they were redesignated as the 2nd battalion of Marines and deployed to Vera Cruz to fight against Villa Negrada. They sustained very heavy casualties but stood their ground until relieved by American troops in 1920. From 1916-1920, marines headquartered at this location served as a training ground for future US Marines. In 1933, Congress authorized the construction of Marine Barracks #2 at Miami Springs with an initial garrison of forty-six officers and men. The barracks was completed in 1935 and became operational as a military command headquarters for allMarine battalions stationed in south Florida. Marines from throughout south Florida participated in Operation Neptune’s Spear which was conducted against Japanese forces in Southeast Asia during World War II. During that time period, #2MC also played a major role providing housing for Naval Air Station Miramar personnel who supported Task Force 58 Commander Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz during his historic landing on Leyte Gulf on 7 December 1942 In 1946, #2MC relocated from Miami Springs to Fort Myers where it remained untilactivatedin1972 when it became part of Marine Brigadier General Edward P Wainwright's 3rd Brigade Combat Team (3BCT) attached to 5th Brigade Combat Team(5BCT)of 1st Marine Division (1MD). On 15 May 1973 elements of 3BCT invaded Cambodia while concurrently supportingOperation Eagle Claw which resulted in Vietnamese military victory over Cambodian army On 10 November 1976 elements of 3BCT again invaded Cambodia while concurrently supportingOperation Slippery Streets which resulted in Vietnamese victory over Cambodian police force
