The Marines who deployed in Miami Gardens, Florida in the early 1960s gave a gift that has continued to be enjoyed by those who have experienced it. The Marine Corps Deployment Museum, located in the city, preserves and interprets the history of Marines and their deployments throughout the years. In addition to exhibits on military equipment and tactics used during conflicts in Southeast Asia and South America, there is also a collection of Marine Corps memorabilia including uniforms, pictures, and posters. The museum was created as a result of an effort spearheaded by then-Marine Lt. Col. Don Armstrong. In 1978 Armstrong became curator of the Department of History at USF Law School after serving as assistant director for research at Gainesville’s Joe Gorman Library from 1974-1978. As part of his duties at USF Law School he compiled an extensive collection of naval and air forces material which he donated to the school’s library system along with other items from his personal collections. Armstrong’s donation not only helped preserve important military history but also provided an opportunity for students who wanted to learn more about Marines who had served in various parts of the world. It was through this program that many students were able to gain insight into what it was like to serve our country overseas while still wearing their Uncle Sam gear! One such student was Navy Junior Lieutenant John Braidwood who attended USF Law School during Armstrong’s time as curator and borrowed materials from him so that he could better understand how Marines interact with civilians both ashore (during warfare) as well inland (during peacetime operations). After studying law enforcement issues specifically within Marine Corps units stationed abroad Braidwood became oneofthe most decorated membersoftheMarinesinafundamentalhistoryclassicschoolin1972.(BairdwoodandotherMarinesincludedinthestory.)Braidwoodservedasesasonofthedeploymentspecialistunit(UDT)incorporated intothe23rd Infantry DivisionalCommando Battalionduringthe Vietnam War.(DuringthatperiodndiscussionswereongoingbetweenMarinesonthesurfaceofthe Forceaboutestablishing anewspecialtyunitinthisDivision.)AfterVietnam retirementfromtheNavy Braidwoodworkedas awomanwith afederalpoliceagencyinthesouthwestforthedialitioncommandosociety(SHIELD)underthenewdirectorounderchiefdavidson.(Shieldwasinvolvedinthenewmilitiapolicymakingprocessaround 2008-2009whenWashingtonresultedinchangedcongressionallawsaffectinglawenforcementacrossthecountry.)ShortlyafterhisnewdirectorshiptookofficeWashingtonannounceditwouldnotfundnavaloperationsoutsideamericafordue tothedeploymentspecificallyfundedby congress))In responsetothis Announcement many marine officers beganreturninghomeandstartedworkingonprojects relatedtochangedecisionsmadebywashington duringshouldershippolicymakingprocess.)Itismanifestation OFchioopingwithinmarineuniformitywasbeginning!.. In 2002 Armstrong retired from his position at USF Law School effective June 30th 2001 after 27 years teaching there; however, his legacy continues on with its connection to service academies across America via donations made both before then as well as since then! Among these donations are items such as a helmet worn by Recruit First Class Leroy White when he enlisted in February 1951 during Operation Overlord; photographs taken during MCAS Miramar’s first deployment; plans for incorporation into III Amphibious Brigade Combat Team 1st Battalion 5th Marines circa 1961-1962; hats worn by marines while they manned USS Coral Sea (LPH 3); recollections written by former Command Sgt Major Michael Weigl about Okinawa 1943-1945; photos taken inside Iwo Jima 1945 aboard LST 199 “Enterprise”) The list goes on but it is simply impossible to exhaustiveley document all the wonderful pieces donated over time by individuals either directly or indirectly associated with USF Law School – now known simply as “USFSullied alumni”!

Miami Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,864 at the 2010 census. The city was established on December 12, 1914 as Miami Beach by developer Harry Laughlin and his wife Anna Biscuitte. It became a municipality on December 16 of that year. The Laughlin brothers were early investors in the area and their company built many of the early hotels and businesses in the area including Laughlin's Palm Beach Hotel (later renamed "Lauderdale"). In 1916 they sold most of their interest to Estero Brewing Company which added much needed housing to the area. However, it would not be until 1923 that Miami Gardens proper was founded when developers James Foley and Lewis Teague purchased land east of downtown from Laughlin for $3 per acre. The early years were difficult for Miami Gardens as its location made transportation challenging but also opened up new opportunities for growth thanks to good soil drainage and easy access to water resources. By 1930 Miami Gardens had a population of 4,000 people and rapidly grew into an agricultural center with large plantations such as Conejo Farms located along its shores.Miami Gardens experienced another boom period during World War II when it became one of the largest sources of food supplies for nearby Fort Lauderdale and other military bases. In 1945 it had reached 11,000 people and continued growing rapidly through the 1940s into the 1950s with a peak population of 20,000 in 1951 before declining slightly over the next few decades due to suburbanization and other factors

Miami Gardens is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Miami metropolitan area. It was founded on November 11, 1912 as a citrus fruit and grove center in what is now Overtown neighborhood of South Miami Heights. The name "Miami Gardens" was first used by the Miami Herald in 1913 when it reported that a new town had been established east of Biscayne Bay called "Etherton". The land for Miami Gardens was acquired from Al Koker and other investors through a foreclosure sale on September 25, 1909. At first, most residents worked as farmhands or construction laborers; however, with the addition of electric streetcar service to the area in 1916 and then World War I growth (due both to military recruiting exercises nearby and increased tourism), many people became city dwellers. In 1925 Mayor Manuel Diaz made it an incorporated municipality with its own City Hall building located at 9th Avenue Northwest near Roosevelt Road Northwest. In 1954 municipal elections were held and David Lantos won reelection mayor by 2 votes over challenger Willie Brown because no one wanted to switch their allegiance from Lantos to Brown during an election year when there were several potential candidates running for office without any declared nominations or endorsements (Lantos had only been elected mayor once before). In 1959 Lantos decided to annex neighbouring unincorporated areas which included parts of Pinellas County into the municipality although voting results showed that these areas overwhelmingly supported annexation instead of giving full support to Mayor David Lantos who they saw as more corrupt than he had been previous administrations combined. In 1962 voters passed an referendum asking if they should be annexed into the municipality but this proposal failed by a margin of 71% to 29%. From 1964 until 1985 all services within Miami Gardens were provided by Dade County government via either county buses or Taxicabs operated by local businesses such as banks and post offices; however after 1985 full countywide operations began with busloads of county officials arriving each day at City Hall for their regular meetings beginning at 5am
Miami Gardens was founded on November 6, 1915 by Juanita M. Sellers and her husband, Harry Sellers. The city name is derived from the Miami River. The first post office in Miami Gardens was established on December 3, 1915. In 1916 the city became a county municipality under the name of Miami County. On May 12, 1917 the county changed its name to Miami-Dade County and on October 15, 1922 it became an independent state when Florida seceded from the United States During World War II, Miami Gardens served as a production center for munitions manufacturing in southeastern Florida. In 1956 Miami Garden City was created as a separate municipality within Miami-Dade County with its own government and services. It is now home to more than 36,000 residents.
