Margate, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 1,846 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area and is considered to be a retirement community. The Town Hall was built in 1912 and remains one of the oldest buildings in Margate. The town began as an agricultural center on Pensacola Bay. In 1892, John Aiken developed what would become Margate into a resort town with pools, golf courses, and luxurious homes for vacationers and business people. By 1925, the tourist industry had boomed and Margate became known as "the most popular place in America." In 1956, following U.S. military efforts to quell an anti-Vietnamese uprising in South Vietnam, much of Margate was destroyed by firebombing while still under occupation by American forces. Today only a few brick ruins remain of what once were many expensive houses and businesses near Pensacola Bay. Despite this lack of recent history it's easy to find evidence that Margate has been around since before Seminole Indian Chief Osceola first set foot on American soil more than two centuries ago! One such relic is the unique architecture which features Classical Revival elements including columns with elaborate capitals that are characteristic of plantations during that time period living off sugar cane fields rather then tobacco crops like other towns in America at that time (see photo below). Another identifier of historical importance is the fact that there are no streetlights or power poles present today within this small town due to Hurricane Irma’s destructive passage through on September 14th & 15th 2017 leaving nearly all infrastructure completely destroyed; however over 80% Of Historic Trees have already recovered!
Margate was founded in 1875 by W. H. Vanderbilt, and became a resort town with a population of over 10,000 in the 1920s. The town was renamed Margate after the nearby Margate Headland and Bay. In 1975, Margate merged with neighboring towns Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale to form the city of Broward County, Florida.
