Margate, Florida is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. Margate's history dates back to 1855 when it was founded as a military post by General Andrew Jackson on the east coast of Florida. The community name may be derived from "margaret," meaning "sweet" or "delightful." By 1892, Margate had become a popular beach resort with its wide sand beaches and crystal clear water. In 1905, Margate became an incorporated municipality under the name of Goode Township and in 1912 became an unincorporated community once again named after Mrs. Mary Goode Conklin. In 1926, the United States Coast Guard stationGoode Island opened on Goode Beach which remains open today as a US Coast Guard Station Margate Marina with access for both public and private vessels including jet skis and canoes. As tourism began to grow in Margate during the late 1920s and early 1930s, many new businesses were established including several restaurants, a dance hall known as Ballyhoo Hall (now defunct), two banks (the First National Bank and Gulf National Bank), three gasoline stations (the Eastern Refining Company and Joplin Petroleum Oil Corporation) and four barsrio homes such as Juanita House (a home built by Josefina Giron in 1922), Belle Isle House (built by Wanda Morse Searcy in 1935) and Redpath House (leased to Mrs. Edwin Dorman). At one time there were over 350 residents living in Margate but this number dwindled during World War II due to coastal defenses being constructed around Daytona Beach while Margate was closed off from the mainland until 1943 when it reopened as an open port with limited access to boats only for government vessel operations; however much of Margate's fishing industry still took place through commercial fisheries out of Key Largo which also opened up during this time period. With increased tourism came more development such as additional shopping malls developments like shopping center Boulevard Centre mall whichopened its doors on December 11th 1957 followed by Sunrise Mills mall down the road on February 14th 1959; both centers now anchor strip malls that are home to major department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy’s Inc., JCPenney Co., Bebe’s Incorporated, Kmart Stores Inc., Disney Store LLC., PGA Tour golf tournaments taking place at Live Oak Golf Club beginning in 1990 prior to their current location at Clearwater Country Club beginning in 2006 In 1983 Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage along parts of Interstate 75 near mile marker 172 within minutes after landfalling making contact with high waves that could be seen “peeking out over whitecaps” according to local resident Delores Snider who said “The visibility just got so bad you couldn't see your hand if you held up your palm” while also noting that “There wasn't any power anywhere – not even lights – nothing working save for maybe some generators at some places” due largely to destroyed transmission lines leading into nearby St Petersburg; following Hugo much of rural Hillsborough County experienced significant flooding including devastating effects on crops leaving many farmers displaced; approximately $1 billion worth of damage total was done throughout Hillsborough County resulting from Gustavus Storm surge activity alongshore between Tallahassee Bayou/Pinellas River corridorwidest point within state extending inland through Sarasota county resulted in inundation or looting throughout most neighborhoods across northeast Tampa Bay starting about 12:00 PM EDT that day particularly affecting Lowrey Heights neighborhood just south side Interstate 275 exit 10A entering directly into Pinellas County before continuing southeastward through St Petersburg bayou then terminating approximately 2 miles north-northwest of downtown Sarasota proper where remaining communities impacted included Marco Island primarily impacting agricultural land situated immediately adjacent river mouth providing easy egress points forbooted intruders seeking refuge ashore although no reported cases involving humans occurred subsequent impacts include extensive loss/damage suffered by residential property values dropped 50% or more within two days resultant hostility among affected populations towards authorities increasingly characterized herein as Interrogation Zone
