Marco Island, Florida is a small town in Panhandle County, Florida. The population was 3,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Augustine–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Marco Island coffee history began with two Italian immigrants, Luigi and Angelo Gatto, who immigrated to Marco Island in 1868. They began growing coffee beans on their farm and selling them to local ranchers and farmers. In the 1920s, an American farmer bought the farm where Luigi and Angelo had grown coffee beans and continued to produce them until his death in 1964. His son took over the farm operations until he died in 1998. These days, there are several small family-owned businesses that still grow coffee on the farmstead where Luigi & Angelo grew their beans more than 120 years ago.

Marco Island was founded by theMarco family in 1837. The island was named after their ancestor, Marco Polo, who had journeyed there during the height of European exploration. The first permanent settlers on the island were a group of Spanish Immigrants who arrived in 1838. They established a trading post and erected a small chapel. After several years, the Spanish colonists moved away and development on the island proceeded slowly until 1840 when construction began on what is now known as Government House. It would be located at the intersection of State Road 10 and State Road 2 today. In 1851, Governor Purdy ordered Captain John Foust to build a lighthouse on Marco Island to guide navigation around this part of Florida. This lighthouse would serve as an important landmark for years to come and it would continue to be used as an observation post until 1978 when it was replaced by Govan Lighthouse (now Tallahassee). The first residents of Marco Island enjoyed some peace and quiet while they awaited developments which would eventually bring more people and industry to their little piece of land. However, this peace wasn't always sustainable; over time members of the community developed different ways of life that clashed with each other often resulting inLemon Coast War (1872-1874).
