Dempsey became the first Chief Deputy Sheriff of Florida. Commodore Dempsey served as Deputy Sheriff for twenty-eight years and during his tenure, he spearheaded many advances within the department including creating a computerized system for tracking arrests and crime reports; developing new methods for apprehending criminals; and improving inmate facilities. He is also credited with helping to establish Maitland as one of Florida's leading law enforcement communities.
