The name of the town changed to Maitland in 1907 when it became a county seat. On November 2, 1912, voters approved a charter amendment changing the name of the county from Sarasota to Manatee County effective January 1, 1913. Maitland is located at (27.569436, -81.609362). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,903 people, 1,764 households and 1,322 families residing in the town. Maitland is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles (40 km) east of Pensacola. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census.[1] The first European to visit Maitland was Lt. James Bogue in 1821 and he named it after Major John Maitland who had brought supplies and troops to Mobile Bay during the Seminole Wars. In 1824 Captain Nathaniel Lyon landed here with his squadron of warships under Lieutenant Commander George Fenton and named the landing place Fort Lyon after Lyon's ship. In 1830 Captain John Smith anchored here while he explored the mouth of the Escambia River and called this spot "Maitland" because he could not find a more suitable name for it. In 1834 Colonel James Purdy built a military fort at Maitland which served as a base for naval operations against pirates in Spanish West Florida. After Indian Wars began in 1835, Purdy moved his garrison to Pensacola and abandoned Maitland until 1840 when again he restored it to its original name of Fort Lyon. The post remained active until1846 when it was closed due to lack of interest from the US military in Southwest Florida due to cession by Spain following Mexican American War hostilities there[2]. In 1898, much of what is now Escambia County was annexed by Jacksonville, Florida making Maitland one of only two towns remaining within Escambia County unincorporated (the other being Atwater). However, even though Jacksonville annexed most if not all of what is nowEscambia County,[3], many people still live hereabouts today. One reason may be that there are few job opportunities outside Jacksonville so residents cannot leave easily or fear competition from neighboring municipalities; secondarily, living close to family helps keep residents connected despite moving away often times for work or college degrees[4].
