The Leesburg Air Force Base Museum began keeping air force deployed gift history records in 1984. The base is home to the 555th Airlift Wing, which was activated on July 1, 1947. In 1951, the 555th Airlift Wing became part of the 8th Air Force and moved from RAF Lakenheath to Leesburg AFB. The wing was redesignated as the 555th Tactical Airlift Group in May 1969. Since its activation, the 555th TAC has providedlift services for military operations worldwide. During Operation Desert Storm in 1990-1991, the group transported personnel and supplies across Iraq and Kuwait using C-130s and A-10 Warthogs. In honor of its many years of service to our country, the 555th TAC placed a commemorative plaque at Leesburg AFB on November 22nd of each year since its activation. This tradition continues today with an annual air show/gift show at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst called "Airmen's Showcase."

Leesburg was founded in 1881 by refugees from Mobile, Alabama. The racial makeup of Leesburg was 98% White; 1% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Leesburg is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1892 by George A. Lewis and his wife Lillie M. Lewis as a stop on their horseand buggy route from West Palm Beach to Davie. It became a post office in 1896 and an incorporated village in 1907. The Lewis family had numerous slaves during the early years of Leesburg's existence and some remain anonymous today as part of the community's history. George A. Lewis died in 1909 without leaving any children to take over his business or maintain its legacy, leading to the company name being handed down through successive generations of family members until it passed into private hands in 1978. In 1984, Leesburg voters approved incorporation into Palm Beach County; however, annexation applications have been refused every time due to zoning laws which do not allow for towns with more than 5,000 residents to become county-wide municipalities without first receiving city approval from then-County Manager Rick Kriseman). In recent decades Leesburg has seen increasing development along its main shopping street (State Road 1A) known as "The Town Boulevard". These developments generally consist of high-end businesses and apartments that overlook either Lake Worth or Federal Highway 1A; they have also caused concern among locals over potential traffic congestion and environmental degradation around I-95 Exit 192B/Leesburg Parkway exits 176E/Leesburg Boulevard exit 177D/Lake Worth Avenue exit 183D (the latter two located adjacent to Interstate 95 near milepost 184). Despite these concerns, no official plans have yet been put into place proposing rerouting I-95 through Leesburg or any other changes to its routing that would alleviate this traffic congestion issue; instead local officials hope that future funding will be available through state grant programs which are currently designated for projects within Broward County rather than Duval County As a result of this lack of action by elected officials on behalf of the people of Leesburg, several protests took place between December 2006 and May 2007 against what organizers dubbed "Project Lighthouse" - an effort by developers who were seeking permission from county planners to build approximately 150 homes on undeveloped land just east of State Road 1A off Lemon Lane; these homes would largely feature skyboxes overlooking Interstate 95 and Lake Worth ]. On January 20th 2007 about 100 protestors marched down Main Street towards Project Lighthouse where they halted traffic for about two hours before finally dispersing back up the street
The area now known as Leesburg was originally called Fort Brooke by the British in 1775 during the American Revolution. In 1821, it was renamed for Lafayette, who had helped lead the French and Indian War against Great Britain. The city of Leesburg was founded in 1835 by General David Dixon with a land grant from Confederate Major General John C. Breckinridge. The city grew rapidly after its incorporation as a municipality in 1840 and annexed portions of nearby Melbourne in 1851. The population of Leesburg reached 100,000 by 1860 and 500,000 by 1870. In 1901, the city became part of Jacksonville Beach County when that county was created from parts of Pinellas and Pasco counties.
