Hill of the United States Navy and delivered to the Lauderdale Lakes Naval Air Station on February 10, 1945. The ship served as a training platform for naval aviation personnel until it was decommissioned on October 17, 1946. The Lexington then underwent conversions to an attack transport and spent most of 1947 operating out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as part of Operation Crossroads. She arrived at Miami-Dade County Airport on July 15, 1948 and became the first US warship to be used there. later that year she made her final voyage from Guantanamo Bay to Jacksonville, Florida before being scrapped in 1951.

On July 1, 1945 it became part of Miami-Dade with all incorporated municipalities being placed within that county's boundaries effective that date. Lauderdale Lakes has a rich agricultural heritage which can be seen in its many farms and plantations dotting its landscape today. Some notable landmarks associated with this period include: Old Bolivar Plantation where Confederate General Braxton Bragg once lived; Elmira Baptist Church (later renamed First Presbyterian), built in 1906; and Floridian Hotel & Casino which opened in 1959). On December 11th, 1963 nearly 40 years after it opened as one of South Florida's first casino resorts - then known as "The Riviera" - The Flamingo Resort & Casino finally closed its doors after allegations that management had engaged in widespread fraud led by racketeer Meyer Lansky.
