Largo is located in Palm Beach County, Florida, about 18 miles east of the city of Palm Beach. The population of Largo was 9,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Myers-Naples-Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Largo were Spanish padres who landed there on July 10, 1692. Jesuit Father José de Salazar and his second-in-command Father Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed on a small island in what is now known as Marco Island on October 17, 1593. They named the island after Miguel Largo y Córdoba, Viceroy of Peru and Captain General of Cuba during the reigns of Juan Fernández de Oviedo and Antonio Batista. In 1795, Largo became an Anglo settlement when Englishman John Stroud bought land from Alonso de León y Gasset for £2 per acre (about $36 per square mile). In 1802, Captain David Levy Purchas made another purchase from Francisco Pacheco for £5 per acre (about $72 per square mile). This area would eventually be called "Largo" because it lay between two tidal bays: Biscayne Bay to the south and Marco Bay to the north. In 1825, James Kapp acquired more land from Alonso de León y Gasset for £10 per acre (about $288 per square mile). Kapp had been interested in purchasing land near Naples but was discouraged by his fellow colonists because they saw Naples as too luxurious and expensive. On February 5, 1826 – less than a year after Kapp's purchase – Governor William Troup erected a wooden fence around what is now known as Largo proper to protect it from possible Native American attack or trespassing by white settlers or treasure seekers looking for Spanish gold heist artifacts buried nearby on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami Lakes then under development by developer Jules Eisman – one day before Eisman's acquisition of most adjacent property including much later Marlins Park which hosted America's first major league baseball game June 12th 1903 also played at Sun Life Stadium which has since been demolished become home to Auto Parts store also anchor tenant present day Sears building also office building complex currently housing several retail businesses including Dunkin' Donuts - established this barrier against European settlement until November 4th 1830 when new U.S.-Mexico War Treaty ended that conflict ceded all remaining Mexican lands east of Biscayne Boulevard] .
