The first national guard unit was organized in Lake Worth, Florida on November 15, 1898. The unit was called the “2nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment” and its purpose was to provide military protection for government officials and other citizens during a time of insurrection or civil war. The regiment held its first drill on December 5, 1898. From its inception until the outbreak of World War I, the 2nd regiment served without distinction under the command of Colonel John Waddell. In 1917, due to World War I efforts by the United States government and state governments at large to arm their citizens for wartime purposes, Congress passed legislation creating the National Guard Bureau within the Department of Defense. As a result of this new law, all state National Guards were reorganized into brigades under brigade commanders who reported directly to Headquarters National Guard Bureau. Lake Worth is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 43,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area. The name "Lake Worth" comes from James K. Polk's 1892 purchase of land around the lake for $1 million. Polk named the community after his wife, Mary Anna Worth (1847-1921). Lake Worth began as a small town in Lake County on Long Island Avenue near present-day West Palm Beach Boulevard. On November 5, 1898, the first election to FSU's Board of Trustees was held and incumbent trustee John Aiken won reelection with 71% of the vote against challenger Horace Hoadley's 29%. In 1903, voters approved a measure to rename the town "Lake Worth." The post office opened at its current location on December 12, 1911. By 1915 there were over 250 residents in Lake Worth and it had become an important commercial center for southern Palm Beach County. Development continued through World War II with growth in storeyards and other industrial sites; however, by 1945 only 14 businesses remained in LakeWorth when hostilities ended. During that time many people left for better resettlement opportunities in nearby Jupiter or Hollywood Hills but some families lingered until they too could leave during the 1960s due to costal erosion caused by Hurricane Andrew which hit South Florida hard that year By 1990 more than half a century since its incorporation as a municipality had ensued and although retail development has resumed since then most jobs have been located within 1 mile (2 km) of downtown where housing developments are situated today including two high-rise luxury towers: One hundred thirty feet tall (12 m) – The Venetian Tower and One thousand nine hundred feet tall (39 m), called Park Place Towers – each measuring 853 feet (248 m) wide x 234 feet (70 m) deep with 78 stories (+ or - 9 stories). Shore lineProperty Owners Association management company announced plans to demolish one tower every 5 years starting 2020 resulting in loss of up to 6 acres/acre (.25 ha/ac).
