The courses were built by George Gandy with help from his brother Harry Gandy on land that once belonged to Captured Bird Creek tribe member Chief Willoughby Keyateepee (aka 'Tiger' Keyateepee). Lake Worth was founded by Lucien Darden in 1892 as a small town on the western edge of present-day Lake Worth proper. A post office and school were established in 1893, but development stagnated until 1912 when developer Harry Beasley bought land north of town and started to build a golf course and other residential developments. By the 1920s, Beasley's company had developed what would become one of Palm Beach County's most upscale neighborhoods with large homes, horseback riding areas, shopping malls, and private colleges and universities. During World War II, many residents turned their attentions to providing war materials for local industries including aircraft production at Plant City (later Palm Beach Airport) and shipbuilding at Stonington (later Fort Pierce). After the war ended in 1945, much of this industry went away as technology advanced; however, plant workers still maintain an important role in local economy today through their ownership or management of various businesses such as Home Depot, Lowe's Logistics Center/Memorial Stadium/Pinellas Park Mall/Noah's Ark Resort & Casino
Lake Worth was founded in 1887 by J.C. Richardson and is the original municipality of Palm Beach County. The area became a town in 1907, and then a city in 1912. It was annexed to Broward County in 1914. As a city, Lake Worth had many aspects that differ from today's municipalities: it was an open-air city with no restrictions on building height or density; the mayor and City Council were elected at-large, not through municipal district elections; businesses could only lease space for a certain length of time before they had to give it back to the municipality; propertyowners did not have to surrender their land until they sold it again to another person or organization (though they could do so voluntarily); and there was no financial responsibility on behalf of the municipality
