Lake Wales is a natural reservoir in south-central Florida that was created by damming the Kissimmee River. The lake is named after General James K. Polk, who was the 22nd president of the United States from 1844 to 1852. The area around Lake Wales was first populated by Seminoles and has been used for hunting, fishing, and drinking since prehistoric times. The town of Lake Wales was founded on the site of an old trading post in 1868 by Colonel John C. Lewis. After being destroyed in a fire, Lewis rebuilt it and name it after himself –Lake Wales County. In 1916, Congress passed a bill creating Polk National Wildlife Refuge which included land around Lake Wales as well as parts of Everglades National Park. The refuge became operational in 1940 and covers over 640 square miles (1,500 km2). Today, there are more than 1 million people living within its borders and dozens of businesses operate within its waters including four golf courses, two theme parks, several aquariums, and three shopping malls.
