Lake Wales is located on the eastern shore of Lake Okeechobee and has a total surface area of only 8 square miles. The town was named for Welsh physician Dr. John Lewis Wales who served as surgeon general of the United States during World War I and helped to develop medical care in that country. A post office opened in 1885, and by 1910 there were 27 residents living in Lake Wales developmentally assisted housing called "Cottonwood". Lake Wales is a census-designated place located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Lake Wales was first inhabited by Native American nations and tribes. The first European to visit the area was Capt. John Steedman in 1775 when he and his party landed on what is now called Santa Rosa Island after sailing around Cape Canaveral Peninsula. For many years it was thought that Steedman's ship, "Rapid" lost its way while sailing near Pensacola Bay and made landfall on Santa Rosa Island instead of on what is now Lake Wales. The name "Lake Wales" was given to the area by Captain James Cook who named it after General George Washington's home town of West Point, New York City. In 1824, developer Isaac Merrill set out to develop land around Clearwater River between Clearwater and Holmes Counties which he named Merrill Gulf after him and others involved in developing the area including Drury Brothers (a shipping company). The settlers arrived overran Indian land where there were still Standing Rock Creekside villages today as well as other areas that would be developed later on such as Winter Garden Township which became known for its citrus fruit industry. After clearing a large tract of land for farming with help from military forces under General Andrew Jackson during the Seminole Wars in Florida, Merrill continued to development his holdings until 1876 when he sold all but a small corner of his original farmstead east of Holmes County line to Wm Jourdain King for $2,500 cash only with no consideration given to title or interest in future development rights should King not live up to his endowment agreement which included paying annual taxes on any new acreage added since King had purchased it originally without consent from either side; this event also marked the beginning of an era where charter towns were established throughout much of central Florida due toJacksonian policies favoring rural interests over urban ones despite efforts by state legislators at Tallahassee prior to Jackson's election campaign in 1828To commemorate this occasion Governor Manuel Lighthouse erected a granite tablet commemorating King's gift at mile marker #10 on U.S Routes 12A & 12B just south of junction with SR 925 about three miles east of town center
