The name "Lake" comes from Spanish for "fish". The first settler in Lady Lake was John Fenton and his family who arrived in 1835. The community grew rapidly due to farming and fishing industries which flourished until the Panic of 1907 when prices for goods plummeted and economies collapsed throughout much of America. In response to this economic recession, many small businesses closed their doors and people lost their jobs. Businesses that did open up were smaller and had less power to impact the larger marketplaces. This downturn in Lady Lake's economy led to social unrest as people began to feel left out and disadvantaged by progress made since their predecessors had left them behind. This unrest quickly spilled over into crime rates as criminals became more emboldened because there was little financial incentive to conform to society's norms since they could rely on traditional sources of income such as fishing, farming or hunting for sustenance rather than developing new business models that would require extra effort or investment outside of typical seasonal patterns. Lady Lake became a Seminole Indian reservation in 1835. The Seminoles had been living in the area for centuries before that. In 1835, a group of white men and women set out from St. Augustine, Florida to find new land to settle. They were led by Captain John C. O'Connell and his wife Lady Lake. They found what they thought was a good spot on the other side of the bayou from where they were staying, but when they got there, they realized it wasn't as good as they thought it would be. They decided to come back home and look for another place to live. In 1840, Colonel James Ewing established Fort Pickens at Lady Lake after he found some coal near the bayou. The fort was used for trading with the Indians and for storage of supplies for military campaigns against Native Americans around Florida. It also served as a prison until 1865. In 1847, Lady Lake became part of the United States when Spain ceded Pensacola Bayous to America in exchange for Cuba. As part of this deal, American citizens could no longer buy land in Spanish territory without getting approval from Congress first; however, this didn't apply to Indian reservations which were still under Spanish control at that time. In 1850, President John F Kennedy visited Lady Lake while on his way through Florida during his presidency; he is documented as being impressed by its beauty and its resources (such as waterfalls). He ordered representatives from the Department of Interior to study how best to protect it and make it available for development into an agricultural center like Jacksonville or Tampa Bay Area had become due to their advances in transportation technology at that time—this would later lead to Pinellas County's creation.). By 1970, Lady Lake had decisively emerged as one of Florida's most vibrant communities thanks to its strong economy and friendly climate. It has since undergone several significant transformations - including becoming a bedroom community for Orlando; undergoing heavy development in recent years that has led to increased traffic congestion; and experiencing some degree of gentrification over time
