The US Military turned over control of Key West to Cuban authorities on July 20, 1898. The US Navy also had a presence in Key West throughout its history. Commodore James Eustace Bartlett commanding USS Constitution (1810-1811) kept his flagship moored at UFPD while visiting key points along the coast during the Mexican War of 1846-48; USS United States (1845-1846) patrolled off Havana Harbor; USS San Francisco (1849-1850) anchored at Finca del Rosario; and USS Constitution again visited Havana Harbor between November 25, 1858 and December 8, 1859. One of the most famous deployments of US Marines occurred during World War II when Japanese vessels attempted to sneak into Cuba through Guantanamo Bay undetected on January 7, 1941. As a result of this surprise attack, many Americans were killed or captured including Rear Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto who later became Japan's Prime Minister after he staged an unsuccessful attack on Pearl Harbor that failed disastrously due to lack of planning and inadequate air support. Aerial bombing raids against targets inside Cuba began on September 6th 1942 resulted in large numbers of civilian casualties both within Fidel Castro's controlled areas and adjacent rural communities which were depopulated by enemy planes prior to landing troops ashore onto beaches near Guantánamo Bay seeking refuge rather than being trapped inside fortified towns where they could be surrounded by superior forces. The Key West, Florida Army Garrison was activated on December 21, 1941. The garrison was initially stationed at Cocoanut Grove in Key West. On January 6, 1942, the garrison moved to Fort Mifflin in Pensacola and then to Fort Brooke in Sarasota. The army garrison was re-activated on February 1, 1944 and remained stationed at Fort Brooke until its closure on September 15, 1946.
Key West, Florida is an island in the Gulf of Mexico located about 120 miles southeast of Tampa, Florida. The population was 3,351 at the 2010 census. The name Key West derives from the Spanish word "Isla de la Vega" which means "Island of Peace." In 1836 Don Manuel De La Vega imported a large shipment of sugarcane from Cuba and named the island San Carlos after his father-in-law, Carlos Manuel de Mena y Salazar. He also founded a school on the island in 1837. The first European to visit Key West was Captain John Smith on December 12, 1775. He entered the port as part of his search for a new route to India. On January 5, 1776 American Lt. Josiah Harmar sailed into key west from Havana with supplies for General Washington's army at Pensacola Bay. On January 10 Captains James Cook and Edward Bosworth landed at Fortchurch Key with provisions and crews for exploring the area around present day Miami Beach before sailing back home to England on February 2nd aboard HMS Resolution along with their three ships’ stores totaling 116 tons (the value today). In 1861 Jacksonville became an incorporated city under state law and Key West followed suit two years later on July 1st 1865 by Laws No. 614 & 710 of that year creating a municipal government with its own police force and Fire Department organized through mutual aid societies etc., both islands being administered by one board pursuant to mayoral regulations passed by joint meeting held pursuant thereto duly convened hereinbelow: Laws No 892 - 906 were passed in 1898 amending all Municipal laws having reference thereto; these passing effective September 1st following; amendment increasing population by 400% during same calendar year [of 1899]...and effectuating annexation thereof as follows: consisting of land lying eastwardly two hundred feet (20 m) above mean high water mark within limits prescribed by said Acts aforesaid annexed to this City now included within Limits shown opposite page headings hereinafter set forth; thence easterly five hundred feet (150 m) beyond said limits line to Point Cruz where it meets tide water; thence southwesterly one thousand six hundred feet (600 m) past Point Cruz until it reaches open sea; then northerly one thousand four hundred feet (400 m) past said open sea until it converges with that nearest point known as “Miami”… This Municipality comprising portions of Flagler County had jurisdiction over only those parts lying between latitude 27°N – 28°W longitude 82°E – 83°E shoreline while Flagler County proper had jurisdiction over all other territory east or north thereof including any cape or headland situated therein save that no cape or headland could be Ownership Freeholders could not exercise rights granted them such Rights vested exclusively in Governmental Corporations created under Constitution & laws
