The Coast Guard in Jacksonville, Florida has been providing service to the community for over 100 years. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was formed in 1926 and is now the largest volunteer organization of its kind in the United States. In 1951, the Coast Guard began providing emergency response services within Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Coast Guard was founded on December 17, 1815 by the United States Congress under the direction of Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. The first coast guard station in Jacksonville was built at Fort Augustus on Canfield Landing. In 1851, the Department of Marine Affairs was created and soon after, a new coast guard post was built at 15th Street and Elliott Avenue in Jacksonville. In 1916, two more posts were added to help with safety on Florida's Atlantic Coast. One post at Division Pointe and another at Belle Isle became operational that year. By 1938, the coast guard had three stations: Division Pointe, Belle Isle and Jacksonville Beach. On January 1, 1941, following World War II and America's entry into it as a member of the United Nations, Congress passed an act authorizing the President to establish a coast guard service throughout all or part of World War II zone. On December 8 of that same year – less than one month after America entered war – President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which established Regulation 5-A of Title 14 US Code which provided for Coast Guard patrol activities along both coasts outside territorial waters extending up to 12 miles from any shoreline or island within 10 miles offshore without prior written consent from both local authorities concerned and Naval Headquarters in Washington DC; this order also placed restrictions on fishing areas off both coasts except those near shorelines within 500 feet jurisdiction of vessels moored thereon while fishing forves purposes only then could be taken; regionalization ensued with each area being divided into Patrol Areas (PAs) numbered 1-10 based upon their jurisdictional limits). These PAs wouldlater become individualized command structures with Area Commander (AC) status but with overall responsibility for all aspects related to Coast Guard operations ashore including law enforcement/security functions essential to public health/safety operations; Access Control Officer (ACE) status granted exclusively to officers employed by Federal Aviation Administration flying over coastal waters while conducting research or development missions pursuant to 9 CFR Part 121requirements). Aspirations included better coordination between agencies involved in homeland defense in order to share resources efficiently as well as increased efficiencyand effectiveness when it came time for natural disasters such as hurricanes etc.; however implementation lagged behind schedule due largely because not everyone felt comfortable leaving their homes overnight during wartime conditions Following American victory over Japan in 1945 USS Coral Sea departed Key West port bound for Long Beach California where she will tow LCM(L)-7 back into action following her atomic bombing mission against Hiroshima Onboard USS Coral Sea were rescued approximately 350 Japanese nationals who had been POWs aboard ship
Jacksonville, Florida is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 753,865 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Florida after Miami and Orlando. Jacksonville's nickname "The City of Light" comes from its location near the confluence of the St. Johns and Everglades Rivers. Jacksonville was founded by Paleo-Indians in what is now Jacksonville Beach on November 14, 1821 as Fort Caroline (present day Old Fort Caroline). The name change to Jacksonville on December 12, 1824 when Spanish colonists arrived in search of tobacco crops along the St. Johns River. Englishman John Smith also explored this area in 1691 during his expedition led by Captain George Washington Webb and discovered several islands including Jacksonville Bay and what are now known as Inverness Key and Belle Isle Peninsula; both were named for James Nicholson, 2nd Viscount Liverpool who had purchased land at the mouth of the St Johns River from Spanish governor Juan de Mena y Floridablanca for £5 per acre (later $40/acre). In 1795 an act was passed by Congress that established a county within Duval County named for then–Governor Manuel Félix de la Vega; it included present-day Jacksonville but no other part of Duval County. On October 10, 1830 – one week after Indian Removal Act – all Native Americans living east of Lake Okeechobee were ordered westward into Indian Territory under military escort to become “Tocantins”; those living west of Lake Okeechobee were said to be “Micanos” or “Cherokee Indians” This so-called forced migration caused many Aboriginal people to migrate southward overland through what are now parts of central Florida and south into Georgia before ultimately reaching Mobile Province in northeastern Alabama where they joined Creek Indians from Tennessee because that is where British traders began trading with them about 1800 Prior to American independence on July 4th, 1813 most Seminole Indians had relocated northward into Indian Territory following their defeat by Ulysses S. Grant at Fallen Timbers Creek near Tallahassee on August 20th 1813 coastal Seminoles moved inland across Chattahoochee River valley which forms much today's Everglades National Park
