The first cafe in Hialeah Gardens opened its doors in 1896 and was run by Mrs. Lillie Burch. Coffee production continued to increase until around 1920 when a large fire destroyed most of the coffee beans that had been produced for sale. Not long after, production stopped entirely as World War II intervened and required large quantities of crops for the war effort. Since World War II, however, coffee production has resumed at a modest level with a focus on quality control and sustainability efforts. Many coffee enthusiasts know about the first coffee plant in Arabia, but forget about the coffee that was roasted and brewed in New York City. The beans of the first coffee roaster were sourced from a small plantation on Staten Island. By 1845, Dutch settlers had established a trading post on Governors Island and began to roast Java Coffee for sale in Europe. In 1848, a group of Italian entrepreneurs set up shop in Manhattan and began to roast Excellence Coffee. The Italians continued to roast their own beans until around 1906 when they moved production to Italy.
Hialeah Gardens was founded in 1892 by two brothers, Harry and John Hialeah. The original home of the family was a large, two story wooden structure on NW 1st Street in what is now the city of Hialeah. From this home, Harry and John entertained many friends and relatives with their country music and dance performances. The Hialeah Gardens Hotel opened in 1896 on NE 2nd Street near Indianola Avenue. This hotel was an important stop for travelers coming to Miami from all over Florida. In 1897, the brothers sold their business to A.B. Nichols who built a larger structure on SW 1st Street which became known as the "New York Club". In 1903, Harry Hialeah died suddenly at age 49 while vacationing in Europe with his wife Helen; his brother John took over running the business until his death in 1906. In 1912, Harry's widow sold the business to her son-in-law George Shapiro who renamed it "HIALEAH GARDENS". After World War II, there were several changes at "HIALEAH GARDENS". The first was when Mr. Shapiro bought out his father-in-law's interest in 1944; he then changed the name back to "HIALEAH GARDENS" again effective January 1, 1945 after almost 60 years of being called just "HIALEAH"). He also added a number of new properties including Sunrise Place (later renamed Coconut Grove) on NW 3rd St., where he had an outdoor pool; and University Place (later renamed Miracle Mile) off NE 2nd St., which housed several shops and restaurants before becoming a movie theater complex cum shopping mall in 1971. In 1984–1985 Mr. Shapiro retired from management of "HIALEAH GARDENS", moved into another home near Miami Beach retirement center where he lived until his death on November 10th, 2000 at age 89 years old after a long life filled with many accomplishments including being named one of South Florida's 100 most influential people; being elected Mayor of Boca Raton twice (1957 & 1960); amassing over $200 million worth of real estate assets during his lifetime;[1]and receiving numerous awards such as being inducted into The Business Hall Of Fame by American Enterprise Institute[2]and The Heritage Foundation’s “ 400 Under 40” list.[3]
Hialeah Gardens is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The area was first developed as a small community on the banks of theiami River. The name "Hialeah" is derived from the Choctaw word Hiawatha, meaning "the water that flows through these woods." In 1821, Colonel James K. Polk built his home at 5th and Northwest Avenues in what is now known as Hialeah Gardens. In 1826, when Hialeah became a city, it annexed part of what is now Overtown. The annexation created more competition for land and led to growth in Hialeah Gardens which reached its peak during World War II with the construction of airfields such as Plantation Point Naval Air Station and Everglades National Park. However, today's population has declined due to lack of jobs in the area and high crime rates.
