Gainesville, Florida is a city located in the state of Florida. It was founded on December 12, 1835 by General John C. Brevard as Gainesville Landing on the St. Johns River. The town quickly grew and became an important center for trade and education in the region. In 1841, Gainesville was named the capital of Florida after its incorporation as a county seat by Governor Andrew Jackson. The citizens of Gainesville refused to recognize the annexation of adjacent Jacksonville by Alabama during the 1857-1858 Mexican-American War, which led to a bitter conflict between Jacksonville's white and black populations. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded South Carolina, they sought refuge in Gainesville before retreating to Mobile, Alabama. The Battle of Gainesville occurred on November 3 that year when Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces under Lieutenant Colonel David Walker at what is now Central Park west of downtown Gainesville. The battle resulted in only one killed and three wounded according to Union records while Confederates lost six men dead and 21 wounded according to Confederate records
