His original goal was not just to establish a military post but also to provide shelter for local fishermen during their seasonal fishing trips out into the Gulf of Mexico But soon after his arrival he realized that this location would be ideal for developing what would become known as "the Golden Coast." This term referred to any area along Interstate 10 between Jacksonville and Gainesville that enjoyed excellent commercial potential as well as high quality beachfront property which could be used for both vacationing tourists and local businesses .
