The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History in Fort Pierce, Florida began in the early 1800's with the first Marines stationed at Fort Pierce. The Marines were soon joined by other branches of the military and soon there were a large number of Marines stationed at Ft. Pierce. The present day Marine Corps Deployment Gift History in Ft. Pierce, Florida begins with the formation of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (HHHB) on 1 October 1959. The HHHB was responsible for all Non-Marine elements of the Commandant’s staff including Personnel, Procurement, Logistics and Medical Affairs. On 15 May 1960, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion became an element of Marine Division Second Brigade which was renamed First Marine Division on 9 July 1961. From its inception until 1966 HQMC detachments served as a model for subsequent commands throughout the Marine Corps. For example Camp Pendleton became Third Infantry Brigade from HQMC Detachment Three on 5 June 1966 while Camp Lejeune became Fourth Infantry Brigade from HQMC Detachment Four on 8 November 1966; these changes followed normal brigade rotations to reflect newly upgraded equipment and facilities within each command area thereby improving unit efficiency. On 1 October 1959 HHCB was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (HHHB). Fort Pierce, Florida is a city in Indian County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,792 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Indian County. Fort Pierce is located on the north bank of the St. Lucie River and on an old military post that served as a base for coastal defense against pirates and Seminole Indians. The fort was built in 1812 by General James K. Polk to protect his colony from Seminole Indians and pirate attacks. In 1819 it became part of the United States after being purchased from Spain by President James K. Polk as part of Treaty of Paris following the Mexican-American War. The fort was renamed Fort Pierce in 1868 after Commodore John Wainwright, who had commanded American forces at Pensacola Bay during the war and helped develop American naval capabilities in that area. In 1907–08 Fort Pierce developed into what is now one of America's most vibrant shopping districts with over 150 stores including department stores Macy's (1892), Sears (1895), JCPenney (1911), Woolworths (1914) and Neiman Marcus (1920). In addition to its traditional retail highlights such as Herald Square Shopping Center and downtown streetscape with wide sidewalks lined with large trees popular among residents for their year-round outdoor activities such as golfing, swimming, sunbathing and fishing; Fort Pierce also has several high-end restaurants including Benares Japanese restaurant (), Zuka African Restaurant (), Nobu Matsuhisa (), Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse (), L’Atelier Italian restaurant () Fourth Street Live Music Hall ().
