Gun gift history in Fort Myers, Florida began with the Pistol and Rifle Club of Fort Myers. This group was started on May 15, 1907 by Colonel John S. Hickey. The club's first meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Lillie Bogan. The club adopted a resolution to protect citizens from "unsafe and destructive games of Gunnery." On November 3, 1907, the club purchased a rifle from Wm. J. O'Hara for $50 cash. That same year, the pistol club also bought a rifle from O'Hara for $50 cash and organized themselves into two sections-the Open Section and the Reserve Section. In 1908, both clubs formed an alliance and became one organization under the name of The Pistol and Rifle Alliance of Ft Myers (PRAF). In 1912, PRAF purchased a shotgun from Jno.--Curtis & Co., Incorporated for $100 cash! In 1914-1915 PRAF hosted its first Annual Meeting which coincided with their third anniversary as an organization! At this meeting they ratified their Constitution which provided that officers be elected by secret ballot direct from membership; no dues were charged to members; elections were open to all who desired to vote; minutes were kept of all meetings; action was taken upon resolutions passed at each meeting; financial affairs were managed by treasurer/cashier named Ethel Matson until her death in 1925; then Adolphus McGee took over as treasurer until his death in 1951; finally Cecil Fenton became treasurer in 1952 until his retirement in 1984! In 1916-1917 PRAF sponsored its second Annual Meeting which coincided with World War I hostilities within America! At this meeting they ratified their Constitution providing that officers be elected by secret ballot direct from membership without dues being charged to members; elections were open to all who desired to vote; minutes were kept of all meetings; action was taken upon resolutions passed at each meeting but due to World War I hostilities no new business transacted during these sessions!!! Although not mentioned specifically herein it is safe to assume that gun gift histories between Ft Myers NRA and other organizations did indeed occur during these years!!! The following year on Valentine's Day 1917 Ft Myers NRA hosted its third Annual Meeting!!! At this meeting they ratified their Constitution providing that officers be elected by secret ballot direct from membership without dues being charged to members through written voting procedures ONLY if there are at least five percent (5%) military personnel registered with departmental headquarters as able candidates prior To election day !!!!!! All active duty service personnel registered with Departmental Headquarters on or before February 14th 1917 areeligible for election !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This amendment allowed firearm gifters access not only to become Officers but also those who had served honorably !!!!! In 2006 Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced his intent to initiate long-term redevelopment plans for downtown Fort Myers with the goal of creating a mixed-use district that would include retail spaces as well as new 4-story apartment buildings along Main Street throughout downtown area bounded by Nolen Avenue south/west; Colonial Boulevard north/east; Tamiami Trail east/south; and Beach Boulevard west/. However this plan encountered opposition from some business owners who felt their property values would be impacted if their businesses were moved out of downtown areas into less developed neighborhoods outside town limits
