The Fort Lauderdale Air Force Base gift history goes back to 1947. The base was first established as a military airfield and then later became an air force post. It played an important role in the development of the United States Air Force and has been home to many distinguished military personnel over the years. In 1947, Fort Lauderdale AFB became one of two major USAF bases in Florida following World War II with its establishment as Central Army Air Field #1. Inactivated in 1949, it reopened as Fort Lauderdale AF on November 1, 1947 as part of the activation of all USAAF bases worldwide. It served as a training facility for pilots and enlisted members untilactivated effective July 1, 1952 when it was turned over to the USAF Reserve Command at Homestead AFB, FL. The headquarters squadron (4th Bombardment Wing) flew F-86 Sabre fighter jets from thisbase until August 25th 1959 when they were transferred to MacDill AFB Tampa FL where they stayed until their deactivation on October 20th 1961 effective September 30th 1961 without ever being used again by the USAF! On January 10th 1966, Fort Lauderdale AFB hosted its first international air show when American Airlines hosted a fly-in competition for their new Boeing 727 aircraft which had just entered service that year. This event is considered to be fortuitous because it helped spur FAA approval of numerous other plans which would impact not only aviation but also other industries including missile technology! On June 5th 1967 – barely four months after its reopening –Fort Lauderdale AFB welcomed its first operational jet passenger airline – Pan American World Airways! Through these milestones and more during its lengthy gift history, FtLauderdale AFB has always been ground zero for USAF gifts enjoyed by our community members!

Fort Lauderdale, Florida is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It was founded in 1818 by Pedro Menendez and Captain Manuel Fernandez as a Spanish fur trading post on what is now Anna Maria Island. The city's first permanent settlers were Sephardic Jews who arrived fromSpain in 1819. The city's growth continued during the Second Seminole War (1849-1853), when many of the local residents served in American forces that fought against Seminole warriors. However, Fort Lauderdale's growth slowed after World War II because of its reliance on military spending and its susceptibility to hurricanes. After Hurricane Andrew struck Fort Lauderdale in 1992, however, Mayor Tom Bradley initiated aggressive development plans that have seen Fort Lauderdale become one of South Florida's most vibrant cities. Today, Fort Lauderdale is home to over 100 businesses and 2 million people who make their living within its boundaries
