The history of the army deployed gift in Florida City, FL dates back to World War II. At that time, the city was a major military installation and host to many different types of troops. In 1942, when Florida City became an Army installation, civilians were not allowed to give away war-related items such as radios or packages. However, they could give away candy and other snacks for the troops stationed here. This gave rise to the name “Gift Basket” which continues today as a popular initiative in Florida City. Since then, there have been various initiatives by citizens in order to support military families living in our community. In 2013, we began giving out free hot dogs for anniversary ceremonies held by units stationed at Fort Sam Houston Museum of Art & History. Florida City is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on the eastern coast of the state. The population was 54,818 at the 2010 census. Florida City became a city in 1907 and it is one of two cities in Miami-Dade County with a charter dating back to 1892. As of the 2010 census, its population was 54,818. The site where present-day Florida City stands was first settled by men from South Carolina in 1795 as Fort George Towne on an islands along what is now Biscayne Bay. In 1802, John Bartow purchased land east of present day Biscayne Boulevard and founded Fort George Towne again as a military post against pirates. The fort served as both a housing depot for soldiers garrisoned there and also as an important commercial center for goods flowing into and out of Miami Harbor during this time period. In 1907, Commissioner James Pendergast approved plans for the incorporation of what would become Florida City into Miami-Dade County after hearing petitions from residents requesting such an action from various municipalities within Miami-Dade County including Cutler Bay (later Cutler Point), Ft Worth Park, Everglades National Park (now Homestead Airport), Dadeland (now Downtown Dadeland), Plantation Key (later Plantation Key West) and Sunrise Beach. In 1912, construction began on what would become the first municipally owned water works facility in Miami when developers bought 24 acres northeast of present day Biscayne Boulevard to provide drinking water to residents of southernMiami-Dade County until 1915 when Headworks Corporation took over operations following completion of groundbreak ceremonies led by Mayor John Fenton and Water Commissioners Phillip Vaughters and Edward Condon that included Mayor Fenton's daughter Jennie Fenton among others. With more than 330 feet (100 meters) deep well headings at three points along curving shoreline which supported pipelines carrying water 7 miles long each way to homes throughout southeasternMiami-Dade County – all while providing reliable service – Headworks Corporation soon became one of downtownMiami's most important businesses with assets valued at $1 million ($50 million today). Florida City was founded on December 12, 1835 by Captain John Hull and his two crewmen. After a few months, the town was renamed Jacksonville. The town became a branch of Jacksonville in 1837 and then Jacksonville proper in 1840. In 1861, Florida City's incorporation as a city was ratified by the state Legislature. The city had an estimated population of 25,000 in 1870 when it lost its charter to Jacksonville due to financial irregularities. The city prospered through the turn of century but experienced declines during the Great Depression and World War II. However, during the late 20th century and into the 21st century, growth has resumed with new development including several large shopping malls as well as new office buildings and homes.
