The Dunedin community was founded in 1887 when two Irish immigrants, John and Catharine Dunne, moved from Dublin to start a farm near what is now Dunedin Square. They named their small town after their home country and their birthplace – Wexford in Ireland. After four years they abandoned the farm and returned to Dublin where they started another farm. In 1907 two American brothers by the name of Dunham bought a half interest in the original Irish farmstead for $600 and built a house on it which served as the first municipal building in Dunedin. In 1911 an election was held for mayor, with incumbent Simeon J. Welsh becoming the first Mayor of Dunedin; he would serve until his death in 1928. During World War I, local citizens organized themselves into units called "Dunnies" to help support army efforts; some became famous such as Sgt.(jg) John Meehan who helped liberate France from Nazi occupation during World War II. In 1925 citizens voted to change their name from Wexford to Dunedin because of its location on State Road 10 east of Jacksonville (the route then known as SR-10A). On November 12, 1926 residents met at Farrell's restaurant on Main Street to adopt a new city charter which read: "It is hereby declared that there shall be an City of Dunedin within this limits and no other." The current seal was designed by artist Harry Houdini while living in Dunedin during 1924-1928

In 1831, Captain Alfred Swayne sold his land to Major Anthony Bowen for $4,000 dollars. Major Bowen subdivided the land and laid out streets and houses. He also built a public school which served as the community center until it was destroyed by fire in 1903.
