The Navy has a long and proud history in Delray Beach, Florida. The city was first founded as Fort Pierce on May 10, 1819 by the US Coast Guard under the command of Commodore John Rodgers. The original fort was built on a swampy island in what is now downtown Delray Beach. In 1825, Commodore Rodgers renamed the city after Admiral James K. Polk, who had helped liberate Cuba from Spanish rule.
