Delray Beach, Florida is a town located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 5,718 at the 2000 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The name "Delray Beach" comes from the Delray River that flows through it. The first recorded mention of Delray Beach was in 1843 when J.D. Fleming noted that there were two small bays inlet on the river and called them "Shores of Delray". In 1849, Amos Kendall named it after his father-in-law, General Lafayette Stroud de la Roche Fouché (1763-1852), one of Napoleon's marshals who fought at Waterloo and later served as US Minister to Russia and Spain. The first post office in DelRAY BEACH opened on July 1, 1885. The name was changed to its current form on December 12th, 1959 after being approved by a special election held to decide whether or not to change the name of town center from Coral Gables to honor then Mayor James A.. Haley with plans for a new arena and park coming up just north of town center which would have been known as "Haley Park". In 1984 another referendum was held in order to determine if a beachfront amusement park should be built in connection with what had been planned for Haley Park; however this project never came to fruition due to financial problems brought about by Hurricane Andrew which hit South Florida hard that year. In January 2002 residents voted 7-1 in favor of annexing neighboring City of Port St Lucie into their municipality creating an even larger area bounded by I-95 on the east side and 9th Street SW on the west side making it one half mile wide by three miles long including all land between I-95 and 9th Street SW inclusive! This annexation created much angst within local government circles as many people felt their municipalities were unfairly taking away valuable real estate while they languished without any development happening within their borders! However given that both towns are located along Panhandle Road adjacent Interstate 95 only about 10% or so of either town's total land area is actually waterfront including most streets running inland - meaning most people living near either town Center have access only to major arterial highways like I-95 orPanhandleRoad
