Deerfield Beach is a township in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Florida Regional Statistical Area. The first humans to set foot on what is now Deerfield Beach were Paleo-Indians who traveled along the mouth of the Miami River and met their match against the Timucua Indians. Settlers began arriving in 1835 when John Wesley Powell explored this area as part of his surveys for a new west coast route. By 1850, deer hunting had become an important industry in Debrecen townsite and many families set up home around ponds or rivers that served as hunting grounds. In 1892, after years of development by businessmen Leland Stanford and others, Deerfield Beach became one of South Florida’s most rapidly developing communities with its own school system (the first public high school in Broward County), library system (the first in South Florida), golf course (opened in 1901), movie theater (opened in 1915) and other amenities typical of suburban areas during that time period. Deerfield Beach is a town in DeSoto County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, Deerfield Beach's population was 1,384. The name "Deerfield" was given to it by General John Custer and his troops during their retreat from Bverly Hills on July 16, 1876 after repulsing an attack by Mexican forces. The first settlers in Deerfield Beach were Joshua Hodge and his family who arrived in 1838. They were followed by James Waddell in 1839 and Amos Northrop in 1840. In 1851 Davenport Brothers platted a township with four blocks of land for $200 per acre (0.68 km²). This was the first platting of DeSoto County outside of Mobile Bayou which led to later subdivisions including Deerfield Beach which became one of the most developed townships in DeSoto County with over 100 homes built between 1870 and 1920 . The community started as a small farmstead unincorporated within present day Deerfield Beach Township but soon boasted a post office (1872), bank (1873), school (1875), fire department (1877), Temperance Tabernacle (1879) as well as churches such as First Methodist Church (founded 1876) and Second Presbyterian Church (founded 1889). Fish processing began shortly after World War I when local fishermen found large quantities of mahogany node off Palm Coast Boulevard west of present day Sunrise Highway due to its high quality for woodworking . Fishing continued until the early 1970s when larger ships stopped coming to this region because they could no longer find good catches due to overfishing . Today there are only smaller boats using this fishery which provides some income but also eliminates some jobs
On November 3, 1892, the first deerfield beach post office opened in the town of Deerfield Beach. It was located on the present-day corner of Third Street and Atlantic Avenue. The post office served as a drop-off point for mail from Deerfield Beach residents and visitors. In 1902, the name of the town was changed to its current name, Deerfield Beach.
