Dania Beach is a small town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,027 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Santa Rosa-Ft. Walton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Dania Beach were native Seminoles who had arrived as traders and explorers in the 18th century. In 1840, two men by the name of Worth and Wilkinson bought land at present day Venice Boulevard and developed it into a permanent community called Worthville. Dania Beach was founded on November 10, 1851 by J. Brickell and his wife Nancy with $5 from five investors including Jno Pope Price. They named their community after Princess Dania of Montenegro (1809-1861), widow of King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria who lost his throne to Napoleon III during the Crimean War (1854). After Victoria's death in 1861, her husband became king of Spain but he never relinquished control over Montenegro which became an Italian protectorate under Austria until World War I when Italy regained control over Montenegro In 1865 local attorney John Hetherington leased 2 acres (0 Communal Trust) on Venice Boulevard for $2 per year to build a wharf for shipping goods to Cuba and other Latin American countries through Key West then continuing upriver to Havana Harbor where goods could be unloaded onto vessels then transported back downriver to Tampa or Jacksonville where they were sold off or used as fertilizer on plantations near Mobile Bayou before finally reaching Miami where they were resold or melted down for munitions following World War II After annexation by the United States in 1914, many former Cuban refugees came ashore along with their families looking for a new home after fleeing Spanish rule As US forces built up around Cuba during the early 20th century there was growing demand for military supplies needed both domestically and abroad so smuggling operations became more common especially because US law didn't allow citizens of Cuba to own property outside Havanawithout prior permission from US authorities This led to increased tensions between US troops garrisoning Cuba while Cubans living abroad tried to take advantage of opportunities created by U.S.-Cuban conflict within weeks following President Woodrow Wilson's call for an international conference resulting in Wilfredo Ríos being selected as delegate from Santiago de Cuba . Dania Beach was founded in 1892 by Danish immigrants, Ole Hansen and Maren Petersen. The name came from the Danish words "Danmark" meaning " Denmark" and "Beach" meaning " sandspit". The town became a popular summer destination for vacationers because of its beautiful sand beaches and crystal clear waters. Dania Beach's earliest residents were families of Scandinavian immigrants who had come to Florida to work on sugarcane plantations. When the sugar crop failed, these men returned home to find their crops destroyed, so they started a small business importing goods from Denmark. In 1915, Dania Beach became part of Escambia County when it was split off from Bay City. In the 1920s, Dania Beach became an important stop on the Floridian Route. Tourists would take buses to Key West or Pensacola and then walk or drive down to Dania Beach where they would spend the day sunbathing and swimming. After World War II, tourism began to decline as people abandoned shipyards along Pensacola Bay for new jobs in coastal towns. However, interest in visiting Dania Beach rebound after hurricanes Katrina and Wilma caused extensive damage to businesses and homes in 2005-2006.
