Airforce gifts have been a part of the culture in Coral Gables for many years. The first time that air force gifts were given was when the United States Air Force moved to this area from Miami Beach. They set up a base here and gave out gift baskets to everyone who lived in town. The second time that air force gifts were given was when they built the Freeman Airport. The Miami-Dade County Air Force Base was founded in 1941 and has served as a home for the 1st, 3d, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th Squadrons. The unit colors are blue and gold. In 1992, the base opened its first air traffic control tower. In 2003, it opened the world's first full-scale F-16 training squadron. In 2007, the base began serving as host to commando operations exercises in conjunction with other branches of military service. In 2013, the air force started using Boeing 747s for cargo flights to help withuman logistics needs in Europe. In 2016, they began flying Cessna 172s to provide charter services to local businesses near Homestead AFB

The town was founded in 1901 by Cuban refugees who had fled to Cuba during the Spanish–American War. They named their new town after President James K. Polk's estate on Jamaica Bay in Key Biscayne, which they thought would be more appealing than Havana. Coral Gables became a city in 1955 and has since grown into one of South Florida's most popular tourist destinations, with its welcoming atmosphere and traditional architecture dating back to the 1920s. In the early days of the United States Air Force, gift giving was not a common practice. It was not until after World War II that USAF officers started to receive gifts from civilians. The first air force gift was an oil can with a propeller on top, purchased by Captain Kenneth S. MacDonald in 1942 from a civilian vendor in Reno, Nevada. The following year, Colonel James Fenton ordered twelve small Japannese fishing boats donated by Mr. Suzuki in San Francisco Bay. These boats were used as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear during the war and were greatly appreciated by General Curtis LeMay who stated that they “made it possible for us to attack Japan without fear of hitting American troops or vessels ashore” In 1946, Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg presented Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier General) Arthur Soneja with two Cadillacs as either a wedding present or future birthday presents. These cars had been loaned to the USAF by Hollywood film producer Darryl Zanuck and his wife Jeni Ladd for use in military exercises at Edwards Air Force Base outside Los Angeles In 1951, Colonel Norman Hargrove presented Rear Admiral John Wadleigh with two Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters which he had procured from England as part of Project Paperclip which aimed to bring back many European pilots into America’s armed forces A few years later, Major General Curtis LeMay presented Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier General) George Custer with one thousand acres of forest land near Coldwater Lake in Michigan Territory as a gift for his services during the Korean War
