Coconut Creek is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach metropolitan area. Coconut Creek is located on the southernmost edge of the Miami metropolitan area and is bordered by Lee County to the east, Escambia County to the north, and Santa Rosa County to the west. The townsite that now makes up Coconut Creek was first settled in 1836 by William Moultrie and his brother James Moultrie. They named their new community after John Cocoa, an Englishman who had come to Florida as a trader in 1794. In 1839, two brothers from Georgia named Hance bought land near where Coconut Creek now stands and began developing it into what would become Coconut Creek Village. By 1840, all of present-day Cedar Key had been established as part of this village; although Cedar Key itself would not be created until 1861 when Congress passed an act creating Lake Worth municipal boundaries. In 1865, during Reconstruction following America's Civil War, many Confederate Veterans returned home to find their homes destroyed or looted by Union forces during the war's aftermath. Many of these veterans set out for South Carolina looking for new homes; some reached Coconut Creek within a few weeks of arriving there having walked or ridden through knee-deep water on horseback overland from Jacksonville to Columbia (then Augusta). So great were demand for postwar housing that local officials quickly decided that coconut shell soil would make an ideal foundation for both houses and churches – something they still use today in many parts of Coconut creekTownship Park neighborhood including our own church property! Shortly thereafter both Baptist Churches (now First Baptist Church & Methodist Episcopal Church) were built on land donated by Samuel Morse along with additional tracts given by Mrs Morse’s other daughter Sarah Ann Morse Cook (1827-1920). Latter Day Saints also arrived in significant numbers during this time: Brigham Young himself presided over meetings at First Baptist Church while living at “the Mansion House” adjacent to what later became known as Temple Square; heading up festivities such as dances and picnics which occasionally attracted thousands of worshippers from throughout southeastern Florida! When World War II began on September 12th 1939 - just days after President Franklin D Roosevelt took office - local residents responded eagerly when war orders called for military personnel stationed nearby (among them many naval officers) to report immediately to duty at Camp Swindler – located about one mile northeast of present day Municipal Drive/Coconut creek corner! And so it came about that members of Battery A1st Coast Artillery Battalion #279 Naval Reserve Unit may well have been among those first civilians seen walking across No Man's Land towards German positions southwest thereof...or alternatively they might have been lounging around Camp Swindler enjoying some refreshmentFollowing World War II ended however much remains unchanged regarding daily life here even though growth has occurred elsewhere within our township including portions bordering Lee & Escambia countiesAs you can see we are quite proud indeed associated with this tiny town situated right smack dab between two major metropolises serving more than 1 million people across 5 different states situated within only 26 miles radius
