The town was founded by James and Emma Searles, who donated land to the Navy for its purpose. The first naval station in Cocoa Beach was built on what is now State Road 1. It operated until 1899, when it was replaced by the present Naval Station at Coco Beach. During World War II, the navy manned two submarines in Coco Beach-the USS Beechney and the USS Dolphin. The Beechney sank three Japanese vessels while under tow off Cape Canaveral; and the Dolphin sunk one German U-boat off Cape Canaveral during Operation Neptune’s Spear. Today, Coco Beach remains an important stop for US Navy ships transporting troops and supplies across international waters. The town was founded by John Thornton in 1892 as Thornton's Bay and was named after cocoa beans that had been found there. Cocoa Beach became a city in 1907 and again in 1959 when it merged with Boca Raton to form the Miami metropolitan area. Cocoa Beach has an oceanfront location on Biscayne Bay and is bordered by The Keys to the south, Boca Raton to the west, Cutler Lake to the north, and unincorporated areas of Flagler County to the east. The name "Cocoa Beach" comes from two Spanish words meaning "tookee" or "toast". The first word means beach because until about 1885 all land within sight of Cocoa Beach belonged to Spain; hence its original name of Thornton's Bay. After America gained independence from Spain in 1898, they began purchasing property around here for development into what would become Coconut Grove and then Coral Gables today; but until 1907 no one actually lived here permanently except for residents of Key West who used Tookee as their summer home. So when authorities took possession of real estate adjacent to what is now Coco BEACH during Hurricane Andrew (in October 1992), they decided it would make more sense than just rename everything after a natural disaster so that everyone could get back on their feet quickly – thus we were born!
